Defence is the key

Burton 35-5 Sutton Coldfield
Burton looked to build on their success of last week, the only problem was Sutton also looked like they were building a decent season for themselves. The first match started with Sutton launching attack after attack, but again some tenacious tackling from the young Crofters kept the visitors at bay. Burtons scrum again went up another gear, and not only did they win all of their own, they also took 80% of their opponents ball. The impressive defence of Burton lead to their first score, after being put on the back foot, Cameron Callow put a hit on Suttons prop, and not only did he stopped him, he drove him back which allowed his forwards to complete the ruck and secure good ball which Olly Gibbs sprinted over the line to open the scoring. Burton's forwards seemed to up their rucking game, and this then saw a decent back line come to fruition. The quick hands of Ben Mumford, at fly half, allowed his inside centre, Callow, to drive the Sutton defence wild with some of his angles of attack. The quality of rucking from Burton meant they were turning over a lot of the visitors ball, and sometimes temptation seemed to get the better of the Sutton forwards, as they were found guilty of holding on to the ball a little too long. One such occasion saw Eddy Brown receive the ball from the tap penalty and, like a rampaging rhino he powered his way over the try line. Burtons third try of the match came when Hector Abel received a short pop from the back of a ruck to sprint the length of the pitch before touching down. Sutton proved to be worthy opponents and, because for the relentless defence of Burton, were unlucky not to get on the score sheet. The match ended with Gibbs, being driven by Brown, touched down in the corner to complete an impressive first game for Burton.
The second match saw a visiting team come out fired up and they got their due rewards by touching down first as they seemed to dance through a stationary Burton defence, even though a couple of the young young Crofters seemed to pat the try scorer on the back as he sped past them to score. This seemed to fire up Burton, and their tackling intensified. Again Burtons defnce forced Sutton back and turn over ball was inevitable, Jack Montgomery slotted into scrum half position, and this gave Burton a better passing option, which saw some beautiful running angles and some intricate passing. Ben Blackham made some good runs from the wing, but never went too far and always gave a good pass. The pairing of Mumford and Callow again worked perfectly and, with Gibbs moving to outside centre, the game was won with a quick fire hat-trick from Gibbs.
A big thanks goes to Sutton Coldfield for travelling to Burton and providing us with worthy opponents.
Try scorers- Olly Gibbs(5), Eddy brown and Hector Abel
