Tamworth Festival

Nikki Collett22 Oct 2010 - 19:11

The Burton U11’s braved a cold start to join other teams from the West Midlands at the Tamworth Festival.

The warmth of the sun soon cleared the early morning frost to create perfect conditions for a day of rugby. Burton faced five other teams in a league based system, with each game consisting of two 7 minute halves (win =2pt, draw = 1pt, loss = 0pts).

1st Match - Lichfield Vs Burton (10-5)

Burton were given an early wake-up call in their first match, when a strong Lichfield side collected the ball from the Burton kick off and broke free of the defence to score a try within the first minute of the game. Burton almost suffered a repeat of the first try from the restart as Lichfield, again, moved the ball at speed into the Burton half with some well timed passes. Burton’s defence galvanised in time, however, to check the onslaught, over-turning the ball to gain possession. Some good solid work from the Burton forwards gained territory steadily, pushing a resilient Lichfield defence back into their own half. A ball quickly released to the back line by scrum half Nial Colett found its way via Millar Pride to Zak Fellowes, who with his traded mark burst of speed, picked his way through a crowded and confused Lichfield defence to score a well earned Burton equaliser. The ball ran over the back line from the Lichfield kick-off, to bring play back to the half way line for a Burton scrum. Burton worked the ball from the scrum along the backs deep in to Lichfield half, releasing Zak for another attempt on the line, only to be tackled in to touch 5 yards short. From the second half kick-off, the Lichfield backs were quick to chase a high ball to the Burton touch line. A moment of indecision from Burton allowed Lichfield to tackle 3 yards form the line. The loose ball was retrieved by Lichfield who managed to run the ball over at the corner flag, pushing them into a 10-5 lead. Burton lost formation for a spell early in the second half as Lichfield pressed home their advantage keeping possession in the Burton half. However, stalwart defending from the whole team prevented Lichfield capitalising from this. Burton managed to reorganised and piled pressure on the Litchfield side late in the game, working the ball forward into their opponents’ territory and only desperate defending kept Burton from finishing the match level.

2nd Match - Burton Vs Barker Butts (5-0)

Burton kick off by Niall, straight into the hands of Barker Butts, good drive back by Burton then lost the ball. 1st scrum to Burton had to take a retake. Good passing which lead to Josh scoring his very 1st try. Well done Josh. 2nd scrum to Burton great pass out by Burton unfortunately went straight out through to the other side which Will gave a great kick. Barker Butts kick off on the second half, great tackling by all very close try by Jak Mumford, back in their half not making it count. Scrum down again back in their half great pushing by the pack another great kick by Will followed by brilliant tackling also by Will.

3rd Match - Burton Vs Stoke (15-0)

Early on in the game Burton put pressure on Stoke with a series of well contested scrums and line-outs from which some excellent passing through the back line made use of the full width of the pitch. Burton gained ground pushing a stretched Stoke defence deep into their own half. Despite some excellent team work Burton were unable to force the try it deserved. The Stoke team composed themselves and began to press Burton back. A well taken catch from a Burton penalty kick initiated a rapid counter attack by Stoke, moving the ball at pace toward the Burton line. Only a crunching, last minute tackle by the Burton forwards halted the momentum, allowing Burton to finish the first half all square. Stoke won the ball from the start of the second half, running into Burton territory until met by an impervious Burton defence. A penalty awarded to Burton was deftly kicked to touch inside the Stoke half by Nial Collet. The resulting line out was won by Burton and the ball shipped quickly down the attacking back line to Zak fellowes, who found a gap in the Stoke defence to score the first try of the game (5-0). The ball was collected by Burton from the restart and run again into the Stoke half. Millar Pride picked the ball from a ruck , burst through the Stoke defence and completed a 20yard run to score Burton’s second try. Burton was almost caught off guard by a quick Stoke restart, but a penalty conceded by Stoke allowed Burton to regain territory by kicking up field to touch. In a repeat move of the first try, Burton won the line-out and quick hands moved the ball from Nial, though Millar to Zak, who again showed a turn of speed, as he sprinted across the Stoke line to score his second try of the game (15-0). A solid defensive performance from Burton frustrated late attempts by Stoke to get a consolation try.

An excellent team effort led to a deserved 15-0 win and another 2points toward the total.

4th Match – Tamworth Vs Burton (5-5)

Burton to kick off Zak passing to Millar who does some brilliant ducking & weaving to score the 1st try. Off again, great tackle put in by Zak then to Niall, free kick given by Tamworth, brilliant run by the Fellows machine which ended in a scrum given. Great pushing by the scrum pack, another free kick given with Elliott doing brilliant tackle right on the try line, line out with Burton ball, in straight to Tamworth brilliant pick up by Jak. Great tackling by Elliott kicked back by Tamworth great slip by Naill which lead to another scrum down great free for all pushing by both sides. Another scrum some good hard tackles put in by both sides but to no avail. Tamworth got the ball great run to score there 1st try. Kick off again great run by Zak passed to Jak which ended up with ball going into touch.

5th Match – Stafford Vs Burton (5–5)

The game opened with a sustained period of pressure by Burton, launching attacks down both sides. Stafford defended these initial encounters well, but Burton's good recycling of possession eventually created an opening which led to a good run by Zac and the opening score. From the restart Stafford went on the attack, and enjoyed most of the possession and pressure for the rest of the first half, but could not find a way through some excellent Burton tackling. The second half started much as the first ended, with Burton defending excellently against sustained Stafford pressure but eventually conceding a score. The final play of the game saw Burton kicking intelligently out of defence and chasing down well to put Stafford under pressure. Honours even, with both sides tiring after a long day. Well done guys.
