Burton hit self destruct button

The match started at a furious pace, with Melbourne throwing everything at the young Crofters. Burton defended rigidly though and their tackling started to show signs of improvement. Burtons forwards displayed a superior rucking presence and all the early pressure was released. Some good running and support play from the Burton backs started to give Burton a foothold in the game, a good passage of back play saw Burton get close, from the resulting ruck Eddy Brown charged straight through the middle to score the first points. Burtons scrum looked better than in previous weeks too and Benjie Blackham, scrum half, again had a good game. As the game went on Burton started to dominate, but they then began to relax which allowed Melbourne to grab two quick trys. Burton then hit the self destruct button. , and the ghosts of previous weeks returned. The Crofters were guilty of trying to do too much on their own, they became slow getting to rucks, and when they did get there they over committed bodies to it. This weakened the defensive line. Thanks, though, to Marcus Tolley and Ben Mumford the score line stayed close. With the visitors now starting to dominate, Melbourne showed some good hands to bag themselves a couple more trys. Burton, egged on by their coaches, upped their game for the last ten minutes, the scrummage stepped up and again the rucking became solid, Burtons back line again found some form, with nothing getting past it and the match ended on a high with Mumford racing through to score a well deserved try. Both trys converted by Mumford.

Burton started the match well and finished the match better, the middle part, however, was a different story. Mumford had a good kicking game from full back, but his team mates let him down as they allowed Melbourne to continually run it back at them with ease. The tackling and running from Mumford and Tolley was in a league of its own. The forwards showed what they can do, but then they showed what happens when you relax. The backs looked a force to be reckoned with when they play as a team, but they looked average when they went alone. Burtons tackling has to stay at a high level as Melbournes trys all came because of missed tackles.
