New Season, new Sponsor, new shirts!
Burton U12's made a flying start to the new season taking on a physical and well-drilled Derby side.
Derby brought 16 players along which allowed Burton to split into 2 equal teams, one team working on skills while the other played.
The first team, captained by Joshua 'J Dog' Lewis, scored a try from the KO. Ozzie Horton who took the kick, followed the ball down the pitch and with Derby on the back foot, managed to pounce on a loose pass.
Derby came straight back and managed to work their way up the pitch to even things out. The game continued in Derby's half, with some strong defensive work by Burton who worked hard to turn over the ball and prevented Derby from getting into any sort of attacking rhythm.
Burton managed to score a number of well-worked tries and defended their lines brilliantly.
The second team, captained by Ben Blakeman started their game where the previous team left off. Some big tackles were put in by Burton's big hitters and aggressive ball carrying ensured that Burton continued to get over the try line. This team impressed the coaches with their spacial awareness, kicking into space and passing the ball out to manipulate the lack of defensive numbers on the wings.
Overall a great start to the season, with lots to be proud of and areas where we need to work on to progress.
Special mentions this week go to Loghan Mulchany who has improved greatly with his confidence in tackling, Isaac Wright who went looking for work by supporting the ball carrier and securing the ball in the ruck, and every single player who put 100% effort into working as a team.
Our player of the match awards this week were presented to our new signings. Archie Thompson, only a few weeks into playing rugby, got stuck in with some great tackles, rucks and strong ball carries. Henry Cantillon also impressed with his first match performance, making a fantastic long-range kick into touch, some strong ball carries and fearless tackling. Well done to both and welcome to Burton Rugby Club.
Thank you to Claire Reeves Coaching and Counselling and to Wayne Trowbridge for sponsoring our new kit.
