Superb comeback after opening 10 min disaster

Superb comeback after opening 10 min disaster

Chris Deighton14 Jan 2018 - 17:40

Fighting spirit shines through

Burton went to Derby for the first time in 4 years, and looking forward to their first competitive match for a number of weeks. As is quiet often the case we started slowly and allowed a good Derby side to press hard and force errors, in which they took full advantage sweeping in 3 tries and a 17 point lead inside 10 minutes. Derby dominated the first half, but Burton ended strongly knocking on the Derby line in the last 5 minutes of the half. Derby led 17-0 at the break.

The second half belonged to Burton, and the team put in a much improved shift to swing the balance. Patiently they pushed Derby back, and began to make them make all the errors, and slowly but surely got themselves back in the match. Excellent tries from Alex Wragg and Joel Parker capped a tremendous team performance that was full of great running, tackling and handling. Harry Hodder was denied after a surging run through the middle by an excellent last ditch Derby tackle, and from the restart, Burton were awarded a penalty try as Derby failed to get back 10 (the try 'awarded' after the final whistle as the ref admitted to his mistake) - we'll take those 7 points!

A second but smaller Burton U14 squad hosted a side from Market Harborough, and were rewarded with similar endeavour after winning a entertaining match 30-22. Overall a fine Sunday from the whole team that took to the 2 games - 31 players.
