Burton travelled 30 miles east to Loughbourgh for a friendly game travelling with another big squad of 23 players all of whom got at least a full half. Loughbourgh looked a good well drilled side from the look of their warm up and so it proved. They moved the ball wide at almost every occasion and had some quick runners wide out and it took 5 minutes for them to score in the corner. This jolted Burton a tad who ran the ball back hard at Loughbourgh and got good field possession and pressed for a score of their own. Unfortunately this hard work was for no return as the ball was turned over and Loughbourgh counter attached and scored another. This was pretty much the pattern of the first half; hard work and endeavor with opportunity for burton but no coconut, with the exception of 1 try by Marcos. Halftime scores 25 v 5. The 2nd half started brighter for Burton who stayed in the Loughbourgh half for the first 15 minutes and scored 2 well worked try’s, first to cross was prop Jack on his first proper outing for Burton with a good powerful drive over, converted by Monty. This was followed by another well worked try, Shortbread and Mitchel combining to score. Burton was back in and trying hard. They did have other opportunity's to score however these weren’t taking. I suppose it was a sign of respect that Loughbourgh started to bring the better players they had subbed off at half time back on again, these players being the big difference between the teams. 1 lad in particular was a very powerful runner and Burton tackling was not up to the job. We did see a cracking example of a good tackle when Lawson put in a big hit when Loughborough were threating the line 5 meters out, hitting the ball carrier so hard the ball was knocked forward. An example to his team mates!! Game ended 51 v 17. A fair result if the score line is not a little harsh on Burton. On the positives the numbering up and counting in the defence was much better, the backs constantly organizing and calling out forwards when overlaps were identified. Scrums and line outs went pretty well and the rucking was OK. Thinks to work on: tackling, tackling and some more tackling, we get this right and we become much harder to beat. No prizes for guessing what we will be doing on Wednesday.
