The Burton team travelled for a pair of local derby’s at the same time, with x 2 half hour games against Lichfield and then Tamworth. We were slim on numbers with a squad size of 16 on the day. We played at King Edwards school and the pitch had a long slope which strong wind was blowing down, it was going to be a of two contrasting half’s. We kicked down wind to Lichfield in the first half and it was a closely contested game, Lichfield backs had good hands and some pace and they moved the ball wide at most opportunity’s. Burton did well to keep them out but eventually they scored an unconverted try wide out wide out to make it 5 before some good work from a scrum and rucks saw Jo Jo Daji go over and this was converted by Ed Robson who’s kicking boot as you will hear later on was on fire. Half time 7v5. The second half started with Burton playing uphill into the wind a harder proposition, Lichfield made good use of the ball and scored another unconverted try wide out. Burton got the bit between their teeth and started to drive the play up the hill, unfortunately it was like the grand old Duke of York following “infringements” they were marched back down again and again. Half way through the second half there was a brief dance and hand bag swap between the x2 fly half’s nothing too serous, however this saw top try scorer Jacob Ruprecht sin binned? On with the game, time and again play was driven into the Lichfield half only to be turned back, a frustrating second half to be a spectator, a slight interlude for some more handbags, but that was it. Game ended 10 v 7 to Lichfield. Lichfield then played Tamworth, who beat them 8 try’s to 2. Burton then lined up against Tamworth facing up the hill in the first half, Burton were a good match and it was a evenly contested game Tamworth batter the Burton line with the hill and the wind at their back but solid defence in particular by Ben Gilleland and Will Wynne –Raji kept the score to 1 unconverted try 5 v 0 at half time to Tamworth. Burton were up for it and played with some real passion and aggression, driving this time down the hill to score some good well worked try’s, firstly a chip and collect by Edward Robson who converted his own try from a long way out, Top scorer Jacob Ruprecht then scored x2 try’s following good work by the Burton forwards and half backs. One of these converted from the touch line by Edward Robson (awesome). The game ended 19 v 5 to Burton. Funny old game Rugby, we lose to Lichfield by 3 points, Tamworth stuff Lichfield and we beat Tamworth. Some outstanding performances, a special mention to Riley and big Pete for shoring up the front row, good line out & hooking from George O’Brien, great distribution from halfback George Abel, Joe Ensor and Jo Jo Daji at 8. However it was the defence that made the difference today and Ben Gilleland was colossal at outside center and he was Sunday’s man of the match.
