Lots to celebrate this weekend , a first bus trip for the B's , Mitch being 21 and finished off with a few beers with our local rivals and opponent's next season Barton RFC.
Early meet and everyone on time even Finn albeit only just !! funny how the attraction of a bus trip gets everyone focused ...a full bus which included a number of first team legend's with over 2000 caps between them along with ex First team coach Karl (SUYC) Ashfield and former vets captain Chris Samways .
We included a Lions style shirt handing out during the journey , with some fun anecdotes on each player and a stirring "this is your Everest speech "from Paz , big Stu Hutton announcing his retirement before the game added in ...thanks for everything Stu you will be missed .
If anyone hasn't been to Wednesbury RFC they boast the highest set of posts in world rugby and have to say when you looked them up and down your eyes went a little funny , Daz's excuse anyway when he missed the easiest of penalties :) and im sure we saw a couple of planes divert round them , pitch also slopes and it was pretty windy . We lost the toss and kicked with the wind and soon got the first points on the board after Daz slotted a penalty after 5 mins us into a 3-0 lead. The next 10 minutes were pretty even with both sides playing some entertaining rugby , on 17 minutes we got our first try after some great interplay and after a number of carries Daz broke the line , with his half back partner on his shoulder he slipped the pass to Joe Ensor to score under the posts , conversion added to take our lead to 10-0 . Wednesbury hit back and scored a good try from their 7 who had a great game to bring them back into the game 10-7 , we though hit back almost immediately with Dave Henry getting his first of the day to take us into half time 15-7 in front .
Second half started and Wednesbury were on the offensive , and we looked a little rattled and worryingly our penalty count was mounting ,the referee was on our case ..was this to be Burntwood all over again ,and from one of these penalties they soon added to their lead taking the score to 15-10 , another converted try followed and we were behind for the first time in the game , we were on the back foot and Wednesbury added another try this time not converted to take them into a 15-22 lead . We are made of sterner stuff though and with the watching hordes cheering us on big Dave got his second try with trademark pirouette off the back of a maul , Daz converted a very difficult kick out wide and into the wind along with plenty of banter / support from our travelling fans this bought us level 22-22.
We were in the ascendancy now and felt the tide was turning back into our favor so it was , the last 10 minutes we were pretty much camped in their 22 and some fine play between forwards and backs saw Joe go over for his second of the day duly converted 29-22 , and then from the restart we attacked again this time down the opposite flank , the ball ending up with winger Brad Jeffries who had caused them problems every time he got hands on ball , he was just about to touch down in the corner when taken out with a high tackle , penalty try given and player to the bin taking us into an unassailable lead 36-22 . This proved the last action of the day .
In summary another great game against good opponent's , we just edged it so finished the season on high .
Thanks to the Wednesbury lads for the beers and congrats note they presented us with in the changing rooms ...a nice touch
