We travelled to Whittington for the rearranged game with a strong squad including Eddie Brown making a welcome return from long term injury , and experienced heads Dutts and Philly to the starting line up .
We knew a bonus point win would take us to the top of the table and the highest league position the B's had ever held.
Whittington though on the other hand after a strong start to their first season at this level were struggling for numbers due to availabilities so started with a bare 15 with 2 lads joining throughout the game .
The Whitt boys always prefer to kick uphill first half as I know from previous experience its always a tough ask scrumming uphill in the second .We used the slope to our advantage though and the score sheet soon started turning over with 4 try's in the first 20 mins and the BP secured , scored by a barreling Tando , speedster Cam Summers after some constructive dialogue from DOR Twedds shouting "Dutts miss Philly out" and then 9/10 combo Daz and Joe all converted by Daz who had a sublime day with the boot scoring all conversions .
We were probably playing the best free flowing rugby of the season to date with the combined ages of 134 Daz , Dutts and Philly showing their class and added 2 more try's before half time both by the forwards through our own Baked Bean and then Ben off rolling mauls, the hard work of the pack bearing fruits .
The Whitt lads stuck to the task though and added a try of their own just before half time but narrowly missed the conversion .
Half Time Whittington 5 - 42 B's
Change's were made at half time with us bringing on the full bench , this probably disrupted us a little as it took time for us to adjust . This though allowed us to try some lads in different positions notably George Hodgson Walker at 8 who picked and carried with strength and power and was suitably rewarded with his first try for the club . Whittington as expected used the slope well and penned us back with kicks to the corners , the positive though ,our defense held firm and our try line wasn't breached again.
The game became a little scrappy in the final quarter . with us losing some of the earlier structure and getting white line fever , something we need to work on in the future as we have proved that by following the game plan and playing to our strength's we can score try's .
With 5 mins to go Daz added his second try of the game after another slick backs move again adding a difficult conversion.
The Whittington boys to their credit never gave up and will be relishing the return fixture in the New Year when hopefully they will have a full squad to pick from .
Final Score Whittington 5 - 56 B's
