With only 14 men Burton arrived at Coalville full of confidence despite last week's defeat. Some excellent preparation meant that on a perfect day for rugby a good game was always on the cards.
The much heavier Coalville team soon had Burton under pressure in the scrums, but despite this any ball received by the home side's back line was stopped in its tracks by a solid defence from Gavin Cole, Gavin Worth and Ben Peach. A little bit of tweaking and rearranging in the scrum saw a huge effort from Ashley Taylor as he battled to fill the flanker and winger shirts at the same time and soon the Burton scrum was holding its own. Shock and awe was soon to follow with some excellent handling from the Burton backs and good support from Jamie Parker who took the final pass and crash in under the posts to give Burton a 5-0 lead.
With this added momentum Burton again held firm against the attack from a home side desperate to get on the scoreboard. Then good work by Ian Gibson and Stu Hutton saw the ball was turned over and Gavin Cole carved through the Coalville defence to score a fine try and convert himself on the stroke of half time to give Burton a 12-0 lead.
The second half saw more of the same bruising spectacle with Burton running the big Coalville pack all over the park, as a result the scrum became even more solid and Burton piled through their opposition to steal the ball time and again. This released the back line for Ben Peach to finish in the corner taking two defenders over the line with him. Burton sensed the floodgates could open but some valiant cover tackling by Coalville denied winger/flanker Ashley Taylor a brace of tries following some hard running on the wing.
Although Coalville rallied towards the end and scored a well deserved try the game, which had been very well played game in good spirits, ended in a well, earned victory for Burton, 17-5.
