Burton take local derby

Steve Harris11 Apr 2010 - 18:10

With the help of a couple of Colts and Vets Burton faced a strong Tamworth side

Thanks to the efforts of these incumbents Burton produced the goods to defeat the opposition 36-26 after a good, close and good natured contest. Burton started well with all players getting used to different positions as props played at half-backs and backs switched into forward roles.

Tamworth got the first points on the board but this was soon cancelled as Gavin Cole strolled through the opposition ranks to get his first try of the game. But Tamworth hit back with two further scores before young Tom Sharratt showed his pace by out stripping the defence to touch down in the corner after some excellent handling by six or seven other Burton players.

Wise words from Veteran Dave Brown at halftime steadied the Burton team and Cole scorched in to score his second try just seconds after the restart. With his conversion bisecting the uprights Burton were now on their way to a remarkable comeback. The Burton forwards were playing like men possessed providing s constant flow of good quality ball for the backs and Cole Joel Briggs, Chris Lycett, Adie Varney and Simon Paupe were not slow to capitalise on this. A move starting inside Burton’s twenty-two was finished by Paupe and then some excellent handling by youngster Briggs saw him get a try.

Unfortunately a Burton error gave the opposition a further score bur Burton responded with another superb piece of play that saw Gavin Worth scamper in for a try. Varney converted and Burton left the field as worthy victors by 36-26 after a fine all round performance.
