The A team returned to the croft to face Nuneaton Old Eds, after a disappointing loss away the Market Rasen the week before. With the club as a whole suffering with injuries and unavailabilities, several A team regulars travelled with the 1sts to Bridgnorth. Taking their places were Josh Barlow on league debut on the wing and Simon Eastwood into the second row. The decision was made to have no backs on the bench, a decision that would prove costly.
Conditions in burton were wet and cloudy and which made the grass heavy underfoot, this would make expansive rugby difficult, and this ultimately proved costly for the young burton team.
From the kick off and until the 20th minute mark, Old Eds threw everything at Burton, and only resilient defense and the slippery conditions kept them at bay. All the home team could do was clear their lines and prepare for the next wave of attackers. Eventually the away side found a chink in the armour and the winger managed to score out wide. 0-5.
Burton finally woke up and started making in roads into the Nuneaton 22, however they lacked the execution to get through the equally tough defense and had to settle for 3 points from the boot of fly half Harry Smith. This came after strong runs from the forwards who found a few weak shoulders just outside the rucks. 3-5.
With the rain coming on in spits and spats, the surface became slippery with both sides struggling to control or make any real meters. A knock on from burton inside their own 22, gave Nuns the perfect opportunity, which they took, sending their strong running 12 down the fly half channel and barreled over. Unfortunately during this charge, Harry Smith collected a knee straight to the face resulting in a broken nose and some claret. How was replaced by Ben Chant who slotted into the backrow, moving Ben Sanderson to 12 and Josh Ballance into 10. 3-10
Despite the reshuffle, Burton soon found themselves making strong surges into the away teams half, great kicking from Connor Hutchinson at 9 pushing them deep into the 22. After a succession of line outs and penalties, lock Joe Shacklock powered his way over to get the A's into the game. Josh Ballance converted to bring the score to 10-10.
With their tails up and half time approaching, Burton went straight back down the Nuns 22 and hammered away for a good 5 minutes before finally getting rewarded with another try. Prop Rhys Williams managed to shrug off the attempts of two tacklers who were attempting to hold him up over the line to score. Ballance with the conversion to take the score 17-10.
The ref blew the whistle not long after the restart to bring the half to an end.
Half time;
Burton A's 17-10 Nuneaton Old Edwardians
The second half began in similar fashion to the first, with visiting team hammering the burton line using their bigger pack and sizable centres. The home team were able to withstand this and eventually cleared their lines. From the proceeding line out around the half way line, Number Dom Taylor collected a loose and passed to fullback Josh Lister who broke away from the defense but was pulled down just short of the line, the offload to Cam Summers wasn't the best, but eventually the ball found its way to Anton Davidson who had an easy stroll over the line, Ballance again converted bringing the score to 24-10.
This unfortunately was as good as it got for the A's, despite Nuns going down to 14 men and several breaks from the back three, they could not add to the scoring and finish the game off. Injuries also mounted with the backrow now occupying the centers and Prop Tom Anderson filling in at number 8. Eventually these changes played their part, with Nuns finding space out wide and running in a further 3 tries to get the bonus point and the win.
Final Score;
Burton A's 24-27 Nuneaton Old Edwardians
Whilst the team was rather disappointed with the result, they managed the changes and injuries as best they could and were unlucky not to get the victory. The next game in two week doesn't get any easier, with a trip to the undefeated league leaders Hinckley 2's in store. Much to do in training to prepare for arguably the toughest game of the season.
