With the opposition arriving with only thirteen players it was perhaps obvious that this game was going to be a little one-sided and although Burton did provide three extra players for Newcastle that is exactly what the final score emphasised as Burton ran out worthy winners by 65-0.
There was barely five minutes on the clock when Karl English first carved through the defensive line of the opposition before the ball was given to Ali Eastwood who raced in for Burton’s first score. This move was then repeated for Eastwood to double Burton’s lead and take the score to 10-0 in as many minutes. Unfortunately Will Peach couldn’t find his kicking boots with either of the conversions.
It was then the turn of the Burton pack to add one of their names to the score sheet as Jamie Hamilton claimed a touch down after a great surging effort from the Burton scrum. Peach again missed the conversion but had only two minutes for another attempt after Hamilton had doubled his try count after he took a superb line to crash over near the posts. This time Peach’s kick sailed over the bar and took Burton’s lead to 22-0.
Although the Newcastle team battled away they just didn’t have the skill or power to stop Burton’s onslaught, however better handling by the Burton side would have seen even more points going on the board. Another break by English saw him burst through to score under the posts and Peach’s successful kick took Burton tally to 29 without reply as the half-time whistle sounded.
Burton made several changes for the second half of the game with Danny Jansic and Jack Bartram replacing Gavin Worth and Alistair Eastwood, while Adam Brookes returned to Burton colours after a first half playing for Newcastle. Jansic soon put himself on the score sheet when he finished off a lovely move by practically the whole Burton team as he crashed over in the corner.
Now leading by thirty-four points Burton began to through the ball around with halfbacks Danny Campbell and Will Peach orchestrating a glut of flowing moves. This was soon rewarded as after a smart blindside break by Campbell the ball was quickly recycled for Chris Atchison to be on hand to touchdown near the posts. Peach added the extra points before returning back to gather the restart and break the opposition defensive line with a curving run that eventually saw him feed Jansic who ran in for his second try of the day.
The scores were now coming thick and fast and English added his second try after he again carved through the opposition ranks showing pace and skill. Peach converted this and the previous try to give Burton a 55-0 lead.
Another slick handling move by the Burton three quarters saw Jack Bartram take the final pass to score wide out. But the final try demonstrated the quickness of thought by scrum half Campbell as he broke blind from a ruck to put in a little chip ahead to race on and gather before rounding the opposition fullback and touching down to produce a 65-0 score line that demonstrated Burton’s superiority over their opposition.
