On a cold, wet and windy Saturday afternoon, the A team welcomed South Leicester to the Croft.
It was far from a classic, with knock ons and scrums galore, the crowd were willing it to be over as the wind and rain intensified.
Neither team established dominance early on. But breaks from Saba and Ciro Alverado put Burton in the right areas, they just lacked the final pass.
Regardless of what results South Leicester have had so far, they have some good players who turned the home team over on many occasions and great kicks that put Josh Lister under pressure at fullback.
The breakthrough came from a Souths mistake, a knock on in midfield was pounced upon by Ciro Alverado who punted ahead and dropped on the ball. 5-0 to Burton.
Souths then came into the game a bit more, good running from the centre and strong carries from the forwards coupled with Burton mistakes led to a push over try on the stroke of half time.
Half time:
Burton 5-7 South Leicester
The second half continued in the same fashion. Knock ons and scrums continued to dominate play. Burton had the ascension in the scrums but failed to capitalise on this. A solitary penalty on 60 mins put Burton back in front 8-7.
South Leicester replied with a penalty of their own, 8-10. They probably should have scored after a great break from the centre, with 5 metres to go, fullback Josh Lister was able to knock the ball from his grasp.
From this Burton got back on top. Solid scummaging eventually allowed for Andy Livingston to crash over. 15-10.
Into the final 10 minutes Burton kept the ball from Souths. But poor ball retention at times, gave the visitors chances. Great defensive work and some great turnovers stopped them in their tracks.
After getting into the Souths half the pressure eventually told. But a penalty was all that could be mustered. 18-10.
The ref finally blew for the final whistle and both teams were thankful. Not a brilliant performance, but Burton somehow were able to grind out a win.
Good luck to South Leicester for the rest of season.
