With ‘B’ XV opposition crying off in mid-week Burton took on the offer made by Matlock of combining ‘A’ & ‘B’ teams and playing each other so it was a side comprised of 10 ‘A’ XV and 7 ‘B’ XV that took to the field. Former Burton player, Rob Poyser who despite his forty seven years, captained this mixed Matlock team and chivvied them on throughout the game as ever leading by example from the front. Burton were led by Willy Peach, playing potentially his last game for Burton this season, and had high hopes of victory.

However, the opposition led by the ever-wily Poyser had other ideas and a great start from them saw Burton go behind to two quick tries and so were losing 10-0 with only minutes of the match played.

But Burton regained possession from the kick-off and a few good forward charges from Jack Dixon, Glenn Waddle and Steve Cross saw Burton gain a penalty. Quick thinking from Ben Peach saw him take a quick tap to feed Gavin Worth who raced forward. When faced by defenders he saw the chance of an offload to Steve McRobbie who showed his pace over 50 meters to race home for a try. Will Peach added the extra points to take the score to 10-7.

Unfortunately, this did not phase Matlock who scored two further quick tries before half time to take the score to 20-7.

Despite a bright start to the second half Burton couldn’t convert the pressure into points and the score remained unchanged. But Matlock weathered the storm and soon had Burton under pressure. Despite big hits from Ben Peach Jack Handy and Gavin Worth the home side just couldn’t stop Matlock from controlling the game and running in five tries late in the game, which saw them ease to a comfortable win (45-7).
