Peterborough Lions may have thrashed Burton earlier in the season but in the return fixture they certainly didn't have things all their own way. The final score does not reflect how competitive Burton were in this game.
Burton kicked and Jack Brooks immediately turned over. Harry Titley put in a kick which the Lions cleared to the twenty two. Liam Hucknall made a one handed take at the line out from which Burton couldn't capitalise, however they kept their opponents pinned back. When Lions cleared Alex Nesbitt countered with a great line and was stopped 5 meters short. In their eagerness Burton knocked on in the next phase.
Lions used a driving maul in their first attack but superb work from Tom Murphy earned a turnover.
Lions were penalised twice for off-side and from the second of these Dave Archer stroked over a three pointer.
Burton played a couple of phases through Craig Dutton and Jack Neale but then the ball was lost and so began an intense spell of attack from the a Lions.
After a penalty Lions almost crossed the try line but were then forced back over the twenty two through some brilliant defence including Dom Musetti and Nick Oxley smashing men over. Further waves of attack followed and they were contained until the Lions Fly Half jinked through and found support on his shoulder for an unconverted try to be scored. A quarter of the game had elapsed at this point and Burton had worked incredibly hard.
Burton were edging the scrums and were disappointed to be penalised for standing up when they had the shunt on.
Burton defended well again and then attacked from deep themselves through carries by Murphy, Jimmy Burrough and 17 year-old debutant Flanker Lewis Sturgess.
Lions conceded a penalty in the Burton half and then a further ten metres for dissent. Archer flew up from Full Back, took a quick tap surged forward and fed Eddie Nicholls who pierced the defence but was put off balance by a tap-tackle. Hucknall followed up to cross the line but a double-movement meant the try was not awarded.
Play came back to half way and from a dominant scrum Sam Smith made a strong run 5 metres in from the Left Wing. As the cover defence approached Smith grubber kicked ahead. Oxley was able to gather the ball and score in the corner. Archer made a good effort of the kick but the swirling wind denied him an extra two points.
Lions threatened on the blind-side but Burton came back at them with carries from Josh Cartwright and Dutton before Smith and Nesbitt linked well only for a great cover tackle to deny the latter a score. Half time arrived with the score 8-5 to the Crofters who had performed superbly.
The first ten minutes of the second half was pretty dour with only a scuffle and three points to Lions being of note. Oxley required a few minutes of medical attention for a facial wound and was briefly replaced by Luke Peach.
Nesbitt made a forty metre break and the forward momentum was maintained by Archer, Hucknall and Smith. A penalty was then conceded which Lions kicked to the Burton twenty two. A well executed driving maul led to a try and a good conversion putting Lions ahead 15-8 with twenty four minutes to play. Ed Saunders and James Davies replaced Dutton and Burrough with Neale moving to Lock.
Burton responded with some fine handling from the backs taking play beyond half way before a scrum was awarded to Burton. Hucknall broke from the base but wasn't supported and the ball was turned over. Lions then attacked with some slick play and scored under the posts to make for an easy conversion. Dutton returned to the field at the expense of Cartwright.
Musetti and Neale combined well to secure the kick off and Titley cleared to touch. Lions produced some fine inter-passing to fashion a further try.
Lions pressed into the Burton half again but their line out malfunctioned and Musetti stole the ball. Dutton then charged to half way and sent a would be tackler flying before off-loading. The ball was then quickly moved left to Davies and the Hooker sprinted clear to complete a fabulous try. Archer added the extra points.
The last ten minutes saw three tries for Lions to make the final score 15-48. The last few minutes aside Burton produced a fine performance to the delight of the Ladies Day crowd.
