Burton unable to recover from early second half tries

Ian W Cartwright11 Jan 2015 - 11:05

Bromsgrove out-gum Burton

Burton made a disastrous start by then played their way into the game to go into half time with the score level. Bromsgrove then scored 14 points in 8 minutes and this time Burton could not recover.
Burton received the Kick Off and conceded a line-out which the home side then drove over from near to forty meters. The conversion into the teeth of a strong wind sailed over to make matters worse. Burton then kicked straight out and conceded a penalty at the ensuing scrum.

Burton struggled to get their hands of the ball for a long period and conceded several penalties. Bromsgrove tried to repeat the driving line-out but this time without success. Daryl Banton used the wind to send a box-kick deep into Bromsgrove territory and a good chase by Alex Nesbitt held Bromsgrove their half for the first time in the match. Harry Titley probed the corner and the Full Back had no option but to take the ball out of play. Liam Hucknall made a great take at the line-out and then Loz Betty, Tom Murphy, Kelvin Browne, Nick Oxley, Sam Benjamin and Banton were all involved in attack before a penalty was awarded. In the next attack Bromsgrove offended and Titley put the ball to touch. James Burrough found Hucknall and Burton produced a great driving maul which broke up just before the line but Browne was able to stretch forward and make a fine finish. Dave Archer bisected the uprights and the scoreboard moved to 7-7 with a quarter of the game gone.

Burton ran the kick off back to half using some good handling before Dom Musetti side- stepped a Centre and linked with Benjamin. Titley then put in a great kick but Burton conceded a penalty and the momentum was lost. Bromsgrove counter attacked swiftly and won an attacking line-out deep in the Burton half. Jack Neal managed a steal and Titley cleared to half way. Nesbitt and Betty combined well in the centre but the attack was snuffed out and Bromsgrove took play back to half way before conceding a penalty. Archer line up a kick but missed narrowly to the right the distance having been no problem to him.

Ken Archer tidied up a loose ball from the drop-out before Banton and Oxley made ground before inter-paly from Browne and Burrough kept up the significant pressure on the Bromsgrove line but their defence held out until half time.

Bromsgrove ran the kick off back at Burton and from the ensuing penalty drilled the ball to within twenty meters of the Burton line. A further penalty, possibly the first in the game for off-side, was awarded and the drive was unstoppable. The conversion was successful. Burton bounced back with some good play and a long diagonal kick looked good only for Bromsgrove to chance their arm on a counter-attack and then use a fifteen meter channel on the right wing, swiftly move the ball out and in and score an excellent try. The difficult conversion was made and in eight minutes a lead of fourteen had been established.

Jono Parkinson replaced Dave Henry and Neal moved to lock to accommodate him. Soon afterwards Dave Archer left the field injured and Eddie Nicholls replaced him with Banton switching from Scrum Half to Wing. A like for like swap was made at Hooker between Burrough and James Davies.

The decisive blow came when the Bromsgrove Right Winger was able to gather his own kick and touch down in the corner. The kick was unsuccessful but the margin was now nineteen points. Burton rallied though Betty, Browne and Oxley breaks and then multiple phases. Sadly the ball was spilled forward as they try line was approached. Benjamin sustained a dead -leg so now Nesbitt moved to Wing, Parkinson to Centre and Henry returned to the pack.

Bromsgrove cleared their lines and play moved into the Burton half. A penalty for handling on the floor was conceded which was put to the corner. The line-out drive was stemmed illegally and a penalty try was awarded the conversion made the score 33-7 and there was little further action before the final whistle.

This was a sixth in succession for Bromsgrove and takes them to third in league, so it was always going to be a tough fixture for Burton. However the other sides at the foot of the table all lost and next week fifth from bottom Sutton Coldfield visit the Croft and Burton have every reason to approach the game in a positive manner.
