Burton Pay the Penalty

Claire Bradley1 Dec 2013 - 12:11

A disappointing performance led to Burton losing to mid-table Silhillians, who in fairness rose to the occasion on their first visit to Peel Croft.

A 79th minute penalty from the visitors secured victory.

Silhillians retrieved their own kick off and applied some early pressure. Matt Tivey relieved the pressure by crashing over half way. The move continued towards the right of the posts before Josh Cartwright set up a ruck in midfield and quick ball was spun through hands to the left where a sublime quick transfer from Luke Peach released Lee English to score in the corner. Darryl Banton converted superbly from the touchline. Spuddy Taylor and Ben Cook combined to break up Silhillians next attack and to take play back to half way. From a further good field position, Fly half Ian Gilmour probed the blind-side, fed Taylor who then put Harry Titley away. The Full Back managed to squeeze in at the corner-flag for a well worked try. Banton couldn’t replicate the previous conversion but Burton looked good for their 12 point lead within 10 minutes.

The momentum wained as Burton began to concede turnovers and it was the visitors to score next when they established a good platform. The Inside Centre floated a long pass to the Trace who scored on the right wing. The conversion was missed. Burton undid their own good work with a lack of precision and as the game wore on Silhillians grew in confidence, despite Birchell repeatedly taking their scrum put-ins against the head. After a Burton attack, a penalty slid left of the posts from Banton’s boot. Play stayed in the Silhillians half before Charl Neethling made a good carry and Banton was pushed into touch. Burton stole the lineout and from the base of a ruck, Jason Knight went over in the corner. Silhillians then turned up the pressure and pushed deep into the Burton half. After missing a chance to score the visiting pack kept things close and drove over for a try. The conversion made the score 17-12.

Silhillians started the second half with intent and soon were creating space on the right wing for an excellent try. The conversion failed but the scores were now level and Burton had a job on their hands. After a forward pass from Burton, Silhillians broke out of defence aided by missed tackles from Burton. The attack was halted and a great touch-finder from Peach gave some respite. However this was short-lived as the visitors had their tails-up and exposed frailties in the Burton defence with a converted try.

The Burton injury list was extended as Jack Brooks needed to be replaced by debutant Pete Baum and Loz Betty moved to centre to accommodate Baum on the wing. James Davies replaced Cook on the flank.

A Banton penalty gave Burton their first score of the half, before poor ball retention from Burton provided Silhillians with chance for a counter and a fifth try with twenty five minutes left to play. The conversion made the score 31-20. Knight left the field with a shoulder injury. Dave Henry came on for his debut going to Lock, with Joe Gazzard moving to the back row. Taylor, Davies and Cartwright gave a platform from three phases of play before Gilmour neatly grubber kicked through and collected to score near the posts. Banton converted. Burton then upped the tempo a little and it looked as if English would break through to score in the left hand corner.

A transgression earned a yellow card for Silhillians and a 5m penalty for Burton. A scrum was sensibly elected and the Burton pack surged forward before Taylor picked up and crossed the line to score. The conversion slipped wide, nonetheless Burton had a regained the lead with 10 minutes left to play. Neither side took a hold of the game on the closing minutes, however Silhillians pressed forward and Burton were over eager at the breakdown conceding a penalty 30 metres out. Steve Hawkins’ kicked sailed over the bar to make it 31-34. Burton couldn’t get their hands on the ball in the final minute and so emerged with 2 bonus points and their second defeat of the season.
