13, unlucky for Camp Hill

Claire Bradley3 Feb 2013 - 10:00

Bottom of the table Camp Hill travelled to Peel Croft hoping to turn their season around, but instead suffered a heavy defeat as the home side ran in thirteen tries.

Burton established themselves in the opposition half soon after kicking off and the first time Camp Hill tried to clear their kick found Danny Smith who counter-attacked before finding Nathan Taylor in support. The Hooker set up a ruck and quick ball was sent along the back line where Loz Betty slipped the ball to Sam Smith who cut back in and galloped under the posts, Daryl Banton converted.

Camp Hill established a good field position for the first time but a mighty first scrum from sent them back at a rate of knots. Burton took the ball and looked to attack, only for a pass to be intercepted and the visitors levelled the score with a try and conversion eight minutes into the game. Burton next foray saw Jason Knight, Simon Bradley, Ken Archer and Tom Murphy all powering forward but the move broke down with a knock-on.

Great pressure from Knight and a charge down from Joel Briggs pinned Camp Hill in their twenty two. Camp Hill conceded a free kick at a line-out which Banton fired out to Luke Peach who then combined with Betty to put Kelvin Browne in for a try. The conversion was missed. Burton were piling on the pressure in every aspect of the game and used a driving maul to make 15 meters before Taylor barged over a for a try to mark his fiftieth appearance. Banton found the target with the kick.

Camp Hill then enjoyed their best spell of the half as Burton conceded penalties in quick succession; however an attempt at goal slipped wide. A promising attack for the visitors ended with Josh Cartwright turning over near the left wing, Burton used quick hands before Lewis Brooks and Dave Archer combined sublimely and then released Danny Smith down the right wing to score a fabulous try. Banton made the score 33-7 with a successful kick.

Burton were soon playing fast attacking rugby again and an off-load from Brooks found Full Back Sam Smith who carved open the defence for a try which Banton converted. A Camp Hill prop received a Yellow Card and for 10 minutes the scrummage went passive. Burton elected a scrum from the penalty and Banton found Danny Smith on the blind side wing and Smith was able to squeeze over in the corner. Banton sent a superb kick over to make it 45-7.

Camp Hill rallied and were relieved to see Browne yellow carded for not releasing close to his try line. The visitors used a driving maul but Burton’s defence was a match for it and there was no further score before half time.

Ed Henry replaced Knight on the flank as Burton soon got into the opposition half through a snaking run from Dave Archer. Burton showed great patience as they probed several times close to the line before Sam Smith completed his hat-trick. The angle was no problem to Banton as he took another two points.

Some spirited attacking form Camp Hill tested the Burton defence and then Burton rang the changes. Tom Cooper replaced Peach, Knight returned in place of Bradley and John Philliskisk replaced Betty. Dave Archer and Taylor moved positions to accommodate the changes.

Some fluid play from Burton took them into the Camp Hill twenty two and it was Banton’s turn to score a try, however he didn’t then convert. The scoreboard then slowed down as Camp Hill battled away. From a turn-over in the Burton half Dave Archer, now playing at Fly Half saw space and raced out to the left wing an out-stripping the cover defence to score on the corner and then proceed to strike the conversion perfectly.

A 20 meter driving maul came to a halt before Danny Smith jinked over for his hat-trick and Archer’s conversion took the score passed 70. Burton then conceded a series of penalties but kept Camp Hill out before Archer again raced 40 meters to sore a try and then convert. With moments left Burton kicked deep and a good chase forced panic in the Camp Hill defence as a pass cannoned on Philliskirk’s head into the path of Knight who charged forward to score. The conversion made it 85-7. Burton will face tougher challenges against Stoke and Lichfield in their next two games.
