Another ten try romp for Burton

Burton at last lay Camp Hill bogey

Burton travelled to Camp Hill looking for their sixth straight win, and against a side sitting at the bottom of the table without a point this target was definitely within the grasp of a team playing full of confidence and showing pace and skill a plenty. Burton returned home having safely achieved this target and while comfortable wins don’t come easily for Burton at Camp Hill, like last week’s victory, it would only be the defensive errors that will be giving Burton’s coaches cause for concern in advance of the top of the table clash with Lichfield at Peel Croft next week.

From the kick-off Burton showed they were intent on success and set a high tempo in the opening moments as they put their marker down with a huge first scrum. With just 5 minutes gone, as Burton pressed forward on the 22, Camp Hill were penalised for being offside and Dave Archer confidently slotted the penalty as his kick bisected the uprights to put Burton 3-0 in the lead. With Burton continually dominating territory they were asking questions of the home defence and as the ball spun out along the Burton backline Sam Smith hit a great line with a run from fullback to take the ball score under the posts. Archer made no mistake with the easy conversion to increase Burton’s lead to 10-0.

But Camp Hill were not to be outdone and the hosts established themselves in Burton’s half and were unsuccessful with a penalty before a passage of play twice swung from 22 to 22. But eventually the ball was gathered by Sam Smith made forty metres before releasing Lawrence Betty who raced clear to touch down. Archer added the conversion but then missed a penalty a few moments later to leave the score at 17-0 to Burton.

Burton looked very comfortable but a long range penalty for an infringement in a ruck by Burton got Camp Hill on the score board and they quickly added three more points with a second penalty kick that closed the gap to 11 points.

Now jolted out of their comfort zone Burton upped the tempo with Ken Archer, Josh Cartwright and Matt Tivey making powerful carries to sweep Burton towards the Camp Hill line where the hosts conceded a penalty. But Burton were stopped after a quick tap penalty, however Darryl Banton retrieved the ball fed Dave Archer on the left wing, who scored the try before hitting the post with his conversion attempt. Following some dangerous play by a Camp Hill forward Burton’s Jono Edwards voiced his displeasure and unfortunately received a yellow card for his valid comments to the referee.

Despite now being a man down Burton continued to press forward both in attack and defence as Luke Peach made a thundering tackle on half way to dislodge the ball from the opponents grasp and it was swiftly moved into the hands of Lewis Brooks who again showed the opposition defence a clean pair of heels as he raced forty metres to score. Archer’s conversion sailed over the bar and took the score to 29-6 moments before the half time whistle sounded.

Burton made a disastrous start to the second half gifting an interception in front of their posts for Camp Hill to race through and score a converted try.

Now leading 29-13 Ed Henry claimed the re-start and fed Danny Smith who made a promising break, but the ball was lost when he was stopped and the hosts stormed forward to force Burton into some desperate defending and with the sin-bin seeming to last a lot longer than 10 minutes Camp Hill used their man advantage to score another converted try and so draw the deficit back to only 9 points.

Unfortunately Sam Smith was injured during the build up to the try and had to be replaced by Matt Boden who soon made a seventy metre break but was adjudged to knock as he was tackled and tried to off-load just as the try line beckoned. Burton continued to pile on the pressure and from their next attack Peach picked out Betty cutting back to score under the posts for Archer to convert. To add fresh legs to their efforts Burton replaced Tivey with Jason Knight with Nathan Taylor switching to prop to accommodate him. Danny Campbell replaced Banton at scrumhalf and soon found himself on the score sheet after taking quick tap penalty following barging run from Knight who was illegally stopped.

From the restart Kelvin Browne gathered the ball and stormed back over half way linking with Edwards who fed Taylor to set up a ruck. The backs then took over and Betty picked out Brooks on the scissors to race to the line. Archer’s conversion raised the fifty points for Burton as Sam Smith returned to the fray to replace Peach with Archer switching to flyhalf.

A promising Camp Hill attack was thwarted inside the twenty-two thanks to a superb tackle from Browne and with the Burton side seeing the space on the far wing they used quick hands to fire the ball out to Betty who released Boden to score in the corner from half way.

The first quiet spell of the game followed and eventually another interception for Camp Hill on their own twenty-two saw them race clear score a converted try. But Burton soon hit back as they gained a good field position and from a quick penalty by Taylor, Tom Murphy burrowed over in the corner.

In the last play of the game Archer pierced the defence and raced clear before setting up Knight for his maiden try. Archer slotted the kick between the uprights to close out a 67-27 victory for Burton.
