To play a fixture rearranged from the previous week when all Midlands Premier fixtures were postponed due to storm Dennis. Despite there being no named storm this weekend there was still a very strong wind blowing almost straight down the pitch.
The visitors played against the wind in the first half and seemed to have a plan to keep the ball tight. Though their ball retention was excellent, the Burton defence was equally excellent, and the visitors were unable to make much progress. When they eventually released the ball along the back line the winger knocked the ball forward and Burton were able to clear their lines.
The home team were soon under pressure again but their defence still held strong and eventually they were able to clear the ball again. They got into the Bromsgrove half and with some strong running by forwards and backs combined they took the ball deep into the 22 where scrum half Kamva Lunqe was in support to go over for a try in his last match before his return to his native South Africa. Will Simpson added the extra two points.
Burton came under attack again but they managed to get hold of the ball on the halfway line. Fly half Harry Titley put up a high kick and the wind took it all the way into the in-goal area. Full back Simpson followed up to touch the ball down for the second try. He missed the conversion from wide out. There was no further significant action in the first half so the score at half time was 12-0.
From the restart Burton put themselves under pressure with a poor kick and then having won a lineout on their own 22 lost the ball again. The ball was moved along the Bromsgrove back line for their winger to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
Although Burton were still defending very well, they were unable to get out of their own half. In a desperate attempt to get their hands on the ball they were penalised in front of the posts for an offence at the breakdown and the Bromsgrove kicker took the three points on offer.
The visitors kept Burton pinned in their own half and although the defence was good the home team eventually ran out of defenders. From a penalty Bromsgrove took a quick tap and the ball went along the line to the fullback who ran in virtually unopposed. The try was converted and the visitors were now in the lead.
Burton came under more pressure but eventually got into the opposition 22 with some strong running from the forwards. The ball was then passed along the back line and Simpson joined the line and sold the defender a dummy and ran in to score his second try of the afternoon and put the home team back into the lead. With a difficult kick from wide out he added the extra two points to take his personal tally to 14 out of 19.
Bromsgrove tried to come back at Burton again but there was not much time left and the Burton defence was strong as it had been for most of the afternoon. When they got hold of the ball, they were able to kick it into touch to end the game. This was a good win for Burton who worked really hard throughout the match and earned themselves a much needed but well deserved four league points. The final score was Burton 19 Bromsgrove 15.
