Bournville had won every game so far this season so the prospect of an away win was unlikely in the minds of the significant numbers of Burton supporters travelling to the game. However having won three out of their last four games Burton entered the game in great spirit. The early signs were encouraging to say the least as from the kick-off Alex Nesbitt caught the ball and carried impressively deep into the Bournville 22. A couple of phases later Bournville conceded a penalty which Chaz Bunting duly converted to give Burton an early lead. Burton supporters took further encouragement from solid defensive work to stop Bournville's first attack soon after the re-start down the left wing. Bournville continued their dominance of possession in the next few minutes, however the Burton defence was well up to the challenge!
In the 8th minute Bournville were awarded a penalty and opted to kick to the corner, seemingly confident in their ability to score from the resulting line out. At this stage of the game scrums were very messy and the referee was forced to reset almost every one! Bournville were a real handful for Burton in the line-outs and in the 11th minute got their first score as a result of one of these deep in the Burton 22. Burton secured possession from the throw, however, Bournville somehow managed to over-turn this in the ensuing maul and their prop touched down on the left-hand side. The conversion was missed so Bournville lead 5-3. Their second try came from another Burton error shortly after this when a Bournville clearance kick down the Burton left was fumbled. Bournville were quick to react and re-cycled the ball to the opposite wing finishing clinically in the corner. Again the conversion was missed so Bournville's lead increased to 10-3 after 15 minutes. Burton showed their great fighting spirit and determination not to be completely dominated by their high-flying opposition, particularly in the scrums, where they were now getting the upper hand. A great drive in the next scrum after 18 minutes lead to a Burton penalty, followed by a period of sustained attack which, unfortunately, did not result in any further points.
After 32 minutes Burton were forced to make a change in personnel when an injury to Bunting meant he was replaced by Will Simpson. Burton, at this point, seemed to lose their intensity temporarily and unfortunately Bournville pounced on this and extended their lead following a penalty, which they kicked to the corner. The line out was won and the Bournville pack drove over for their 3rd try of the game. The conversion this time was successful so Burton now trailed 17-3. Burton's response to this setback was impressive and so too was the resolve of Bournville's defense. On the stroke of half-time Burton steadily made their way to the Bournville 5 metre line and had a line out. They went in search of a pushover try but were again kept out by the home defence. At this the referee blew for half-time.
The second half began in a similar fashion to the first when Lewis Sturgess caught the ball from the kick-off and made a good break back into the Bournville half. Burton then moved the ball well through a number of phases to find themselves deep in the Bournville 22. It appeared that Bournville were somewhat unsettled by the ferocity of Burton's attack and they were penalised for tackling the man without the ball shortly after. Simpson converted the resulting penalty kick and Burton had immediately started to reduce the deficit with the score now standing 17-6. Bournville's unsettled staus got worse following the re-start as Burton now had their tails well and truly up! In the 3rd minute Burton kicked into the Bournville half and followed up in numbers, which drew another penalty from the home team. A good kick progressed Burton up to the Bournville 5 metre line. A great catch and drive from the following line-out resulted in a Burton try for captain Dom Taylor. Simpson landed the conversion to make the score 17-13 in Bournville's favour. Bournville were now visibly shaken and a further error from the re-start meant Burton were able to kick deep into their half with 12 minutes gone. Bournvillle were then penalised for offside and Burton, sensing an unexpected victory kicked for the corner again, this time, however, to no avail as Bournville held firm.
Bournville regained their composure and for the next few minutes it was Burton's turn to come under pressure. They coped with this admirably and did not concede a score through excellent and determined defending across the team. On one occasion when Bournville looked sure to score they aided Burton's defensive efforts when they were penalised for crossing when just 5 metres short of the line! Burton then progressed very efficiently into Bournville's half and following a scrum on the 10 metre line Burton were awarded another penalty, which was beautifully converted by Simpsom to make the score 17-16 to Bournville. From the re-start Burton then made a silly unforced error to gift possession back to Bournville and they immediately took the game to Burton in a big way, perhaps themselves realising the serious threat to their unblemished record! However they were still unable to cope with the pressure Burton were putting them under, an example of which was a brilliant last ditch tackle by Tahriq Allen and they continued to make basic errors for the remainder of the game.
Burton never gave up on the possibility of achieving what would have been a massive shock to the rest of the teams in the Midlands Division. However it was the dominance of the Bournville line-out that saw Burton's final chance come to nothing as the referee blew his whistle for the end of the game. There were very mixed emotions in the dressing rooms afterwards - for Bournville the sense of relief in just maintaining their winning run to 15 games and for Burton, immense pride in a brilliant performance, yet massive disappointment in not being able to grab victory late in the second half, which saw them score 13 unanswered points against the league leaders.
