Having narrowly beaten Sandbach at home and knowing how tough it is to play them on their own ground Burton were fully prepared for a hard game.
There was a tentative start to the match by both sides with both making errors early on. However, the visitors gradually got on top and after the forwards had driven into the Sandbach 22 the home team were penalized for a side entry into the maul. Chaz Bunting Kicked the goal to open the scoring.
Burton were soon on the attack again and scrum half Kamva Lunqe made a break from the base of the scrum, and found full back Bunting in support, who in turn passed to winger Harris Mountford. He brushed of a tackle and ran in to score a try close to the posts. Bunting added the extra two points.
Sandbach soon got their act together and Burton found it difficult to cope with the speed of their play. Indeed, they were lucky on occasions that the home team perhaps played too quickly and were unable to hang on to the ball. Eventually prop Tahriq Allen got sent to the sin bin for a front row offence and with the extra man the home team were able to get on the score sheet. They won the ball from a scrum and passed it along the back line for the winger to score. The conversion was missed.
Burton were able to stretch their lead when they were awarded a penalty for a high tackle. Bunting kicked the goal from the 10 metre line. From the kick off the home team recovered the ball and drove deep into the Burton half. In a planned move the left winger received the ball in the centre and ran almost to the burton 5 metre line. Although the Burton defence scrambled well, prop Ben Smith was adjudged to have killed the ball and he was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes. With the Burton scrum now seriously depleted the home team chose a scrum instead of a penalty kick and pushed over for a try. The conversion was missed and Burton were able to hold out for the remaining six minutes of the half without conceding any further points so the score at half time was 10-13.
From the restart Burton fell foul of the referee again and the home team were able to get deep into Burton territory. A simple missed tackle in the centre allowed the Sandbach centre to score under the posts. This plus the two points for the conversion took the home side into the lead.
They went further into the lead when from a scrum on the Burton 5 metre line the ball travelled along the back line for the winger to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
The visitors were not beaten yet however and now back to full strength the pack began to get on top. Following a good drive by the forwards Alex Nesbitt came off his wing to take the ball in the centre and crashed through the defence to score. Will Simpson, having come on for Bunting added the extra points to bring Burton back within two points of the lead.
However, the home team stretched their lead when Burton were again penalised. From the ensuing lineout the ball went along the back line for the winger to score in the corner. The conversion weas again missed.
The two sides then exchanged penalty goals the first by Will Simpson and the second by the Sandbach kicker to make the score 30-23. Burton were not done yet and after some great running by the pack, Nesbitt scored again in a repeat move of his earlier try. There was then more controversy when Burton needed the conversion to draw level, both touch judges raised their flags, but the referee overruled them and said it had missed.
From the restart Burton won the ball and drove back into the Sandbach half where, this time, they were awarded a penalty. Simpson kicked the goal from the ten metre line with literally the last kick of the game for a deserved victory. The final score was Sandbach 30 Burton 31.
