The South Yorkshire side were one place above Burton in the league, so a lot was at stake for both teams.
Burton started badly and came under attack immediately but were awarded a penalty as a Doncaster player held onto the ball in a tackle. However Full back Will Simpsons penalty kick failed to find touch and so Burton were under pressure again. It was therefore no surprise when the visitors’ centre crashed through a tackle to score the first try. The kicker added the extra points. Shortly after this Burton again put themselves under pressure when they failed to clear the ball properly. The visitors ran the ball back and then won a penalty which the kicker put over to increase their lead.
Burton at last got into the game and were able to string some passes together. They were awarded a penalty and from the ensuing line out they drove towards the line. Flanker Jack Neal broke away to score. Simpson added the extra points.
Just before half time the Doncaster scrum half had a rush of blood and struck the Burton scrum half Chaz Bunting in the face. The referee sent him off and awarded Burton a penalty which Simson kicked to level the score at 10-10.
Burton started the second half well and were soon on the attack. Simpson made a lovely break and timed his inside pass perfectly. Bunting, who did not seem to be affected by the blow he received, was in support to take the pass and out strip the Doncaster defence to score in the corner. Simpson missed the conversion attempt from the touch line but Burton were in the lead.
Having got themselves back into the game and having an extra man for the remainder of the match the feeling was that Burton should go on to win. However, this was not to be as although the home team had most of the possession in the second half, mistakes crept in again and they also gave several penalties away through not rucking effective causing the ball carrier to hold onto it. The referee had shown early in the match when both sides were penalised that he would not allow any leeway in this area.
From one of these penalties the visitors were able to get a lineout in the Burton 22. The ball went out to the fly half who chipped over the Burton defence to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
The next try came when Burton were attacking. They again failed to ruck properly and the Doncaster flanker picked the ball up and ran almost from his own 22 to score under the posts. The kicker added the extra points.
The next Doncaster try came from a simple missed tackle in the centre and was converted to take their tall to 29 and seemingly safe. Burton got a consolation try towards the end of the match when the forwards got a pushover try with Lewis Sturgess getting the touch down. Simpson added the extra points.
Although Doncaster Phoenix are a good side this was a game that Burton could have, and perhaps, should have won. However once again they will have to satisfy themselves with a losing bonus point. They remain in twelfth position in the Midlands premier league only above Peterborough Lions and South Leicester.
