They had an early setback however when almost immediately after the kickoff, they gifted the home team with a try. A poor clearance kick was collected by the Bromsgrove right winger and a missed tackle allowed him to run in and score close to the posts. The try was converted.
Burton tried to attack after this but handling errors let them down and they were unable to make progress. Eventually the forwards won the ball and fly half Harry Titley sold a lovely dummy and ran through the gap he created for himself to score under the posts. Will Simpson added the extra points to level the scores.
Both teams then played attacking rugby when they got the ball but both defences were strong and so there was a bit of a stalemate. The home team went ahead from a penalty goal after Burton were penalised for a high tackle.
Just before half time Burton got close to the Bromsgrove goal line. The forwards pounded the line through several phases before it was released and a long pass to winger George Abel allowed him to go over for a try. Simpson again converted from the touch line with the last kick of the half so the score at half time was 10-14.
In the second half Burton had most of the possession but wasted it either by handling errors or through ineffective kicking. Then some more poor tackling allowed the home team to get to the Burton 22 metre line where they were awarded a penalty. They took a quick tap and although the visitors were able to stop the ball carrier from the ensuing ruck the Bromsgrove scrum half made a break and scored under the posts. He converted his own try.
The final try was fortuitous for the home team to say the least. One of the Burton defenders put in a good tackle and dislodged the ball from the attacker’s hands. It popped up into the air and was collected by another Bromsgrove player who ran in virtually unopposed to score under the posts. The kicker again added the extra points.
Burton tried to get something out of the game but the Bromsgrove defence was good, and the visitors made too many mistakes so the final score was Bromsgrove 24 Burton 14.
