Several injuries and unavailability meant a number of positional and personnel changes were forced upon Burton which did not make the prospect of an away win any easier. However the early exchanges suggested that the game would be hard fought and a close contest as play fluctuated either side of the half-way line.
In the 3rd minute Burton were pinned deep in their own '22' by a good kick to the corner. The resulting line-out for Burton was stolen rather too easily and Bridgnorth opened the scoring. The conversion was missed so Bridgnorth lead 5-0 after just 3 minutes. Over the next few minutes the honours were even as play again remained in the middle of the pitch. Burton survived a period of Bridgnorth pressure and their first penalty after 10 minutes allowed them to clear up to half-way again. From the resulting line-out, Burton moved the ball through the backs hands and seemed to be gaining some momentum. Probing kicks through the Bridgnorth line meant Burton were able to maintain the play in Bridgnorth territory. However, Bridgnorth increased their lead by running back one of these kicks, helped by a couple of missed tackles and a apparent forward pass not picked up by the referee, to score their second try under the posts. A successful conversion meant the score increased to 12-0 in the 17th minute.
Burton's response to this setback was impressive, as was the resolve of Bridgnorth's defense. Burton continued to pile on the pressure and as a consequence a yellow card was shown to a Bridgnorth player in the 24 minute. This offered Burton some hope, which was immediately realised as Burton drove over from a 5-metre scrum with Lewis Sturgess touching down. Dave Archer added the extras to make the score 12-7.
30 minutes into the game and it was the turn of Bridgnorth to pile the pressure on the Burton defence, which was equally impressive as the home team in not conceeding at this point. However the referee showed the second yellow card, this time against Burton. The resulting penalty was converted and Bridgnorth increased their lead to 15-7. This, however, spurred-on Burton and following a succession of forward drives resulted in a kick through the defensive line and chase which was won by Nick Oxley for their second try of the game in the left corner. Archer was not successful with the conversion this time leaving the score 15-12 to Bridgnorth.
Burton now had their tails up and quickly took play deep into the Bridgnorth half. With a couple of minutes to go before half-time Burton were really in the game, however that was to change with two late tries for the home side. The first followed a quickly taken free-kick in the Bridgnorth '22' catching Burton unawares and a combination of poor tackling and the seriously rapid pace of the opposition winger lead to a converted try under the posts. Bridgnorth really turn the screw and Burton were unable to prevent a further score which was converted to make the score at half-time Bridgnorth 29-12 Burton.
The second-half started very much the same way as Bridgnorth were relentless in their quest for victory. Unfortunately Burton could not prevent another score after 5 minutes and with the conversion added the Bridgnorth lead extended to 36-12. Burton were now seriously at risk of suffering a big defeat and it was no surprise that errors began to occur, one of which lead to Bridgnorth's next score - a breakaway try under the posts after 10 minutes, converted to increase their lead to 43-12.
However to their great credit Burton once again got themselves into Bridgnorth's '22' and following a quickly taken penalty Josh Kent scored Burton's 3rd try of the game. Dave Archer converted to make the score 43-19 and there was a degree of optimism amongst the travelling Burton supporters. The game became very closely fought and tight once again but it was Bridgnorth who went on to score further points.
One of the major differences between the two sides seemed to be support of players breaking the line. Bridgnorth had much greater success in this area than Burton and this, combined with a couple of missed tackles, was very apparent in Bridgnorth's next score with 10 minutes of the game remaining, making the score 48-19. The final score of the afternoon was a bit of a fluke in that a kick through by Bridgnorth seemed to hit the boot of another attacker bounced favourably and was touched down for their final try. A successful conversion made the final score Bridgnorth 55-19 Burton.
