Five Points for Burton!

Five Points for Burton!

Claire Bradley8 Apr 2019 - 11:01

Burton travelled to Nuneaton on Saturday needing two points to ensure they remain in the Midlands Premier division.

As things turned out they came away with all five available points, so are now safe. They survived an early scare when with less than a minute on the clock the Nuneaton centre danced his way through the Burton defence. Luckily for Burton he was unable to ground the ball and so all the home team got was a five-metre scrum. Burton were able to get the ball clear and for the next ten minutes they had the lion’s share of possession but found it difficult to penetrate the Nuneaton defence. It was the home team who scored first however, when they were awarded a penalty. The fly half kicked the goal from the 10-metre line.

The visitors were soon on the attack again and got the throw in to a lineout about 10 metres out from the Nuneaton line. Joe Gazzard won the ball and crashed through to open the scoring for Burton. The conversion was missed but Burton were now in the lead.

Burton were soon on the attack again and Saba Svimonishvili made a break and found Gazzard in support. He in turn found Athenkosi Kethani who scored under the posts. Will Simpson added the extra points.

It was not long before the visitors were piling on the pressure again and when they were awarded a penalty on the Nuneaton 5 metre line, they chose a scrum. The pack drove over the line for a pushover try with captain Dominic “Spud” Taylor getting the touch down. Simpson again added the extra points. The half time score was 3-19.

Burton extended their lead almost immediately after the restart when Simpson gathered the ball and with some elusive running outstripped the Nuneaton defence to score. He then converted his own try.

The home team then managed to keep the ball for a period and were able to exert some pressure on the Burton defence. They won a line out in the Burton 22 and their backs combined to run in their first try. The fly half added the extra two points.

This try did not deter the Burton team who were soon putting the home team under pressure again. The Nuneaton fullback attempted a clearance kick which did not find touch, but was caught by Simpson on his own 10 metre line. He chipped ahead and then regathered the ball to go over the line almost unopposed. He again converted his own try.

Despite the score line Nuneaton were still in the game at this point and eventually were awarded a penalty which resulted in a line out on the Burton 5 metre line. They won the ball and went over for a second try. The flyhalf again converted to make the score 17-33.

This was to be their last score however as Burton ran in three more tries before the end of the match. The first of these was scored by centre Alex Nesbitt who broke through an attempted tackle and ran from the Nuneaton 10 metre line to score under the posts. The second was a fantastic individual effort by Svimonishvili who ran from the halfway line beating several defenders and then ran around under the posts to make the conversion easier. Then winger Jamie Dutton got in on the act. The forwards charged upfield recycled the ball and it went out to Dutton who weaved his way through the defence to score. Simpson converted all three of these tries. To make the final score Nuneaton 17 Burton 54.
