Burton made the long and tedious journey to Luctonians on Saturday.

The Herefordshire side were second in the league and pushing for promotion back to National league two and had beaten Burton narrowly at Peel Croft in November, so a tough match was expected.

And so it proved to be. Burton were under pressure from the kick off. When they did win the ball back a clearance kick failed to find touch, so they were back under pressure immediately. After a missed tackle the centre scored the first try. The kicker added the extra points.

Luctonians were soon on the attack again and were awarded a penalty they chose a scrum and won the ball which was passed quickly along their strong running back line for the winger to score in the corner. The kicker again added the extra points.

Burton then managed to keep the ball for a short time and went on the attack but found it hard to penetrate Luctonians’ defence. Disaster struck when Harry Titley’s pass was intercepted by the Luctonians centre who ran from just outside his own 22 to score under the posts. Again the try was converted.

This was a signal for the flood gates to open and Burton could not prevent the home team from scoring three more tries before half time. All of these were converted so the score at half time was 42-0.

After the restart the home team seemed to drop their intensity somewhat and Burton were able to get into the game. They were awarded a penalty which resulted in a lineout just short of the 5-metre line. They won the ball and number eight Lelo Gemache went over for a try. Will Simpson converted.

At this stage Burton were playing well with the ball in hand but their defence had no answer to the fast and skilful Luctonians backs. Another simple missed tackle allowed them to score their eighth try which was again converted.

Burton refused to give up however and went in search of a try bonus point. Unfortunately, this eluded them as they were only able to score one more try. This happened when Will Simpson made a nice break and the found captain Dominic Taylor in support to take the ball over the line. Simpson added the extra points.

However, the home team were to have the last word. Burton tried to attack but the defence was strong. When Luctonians got hold of the ball they retained it well and went through several phases, eventually grinding the Burton defence down and again going over for a try. This time the kicker missed the conversion with what was probably one of his easier kicks so Burton actually won the second half, but the damage was done in the first half. The final score was Luctonians 54 Burton 14.
