Great Win for Burton

Great Win for Burton

Claire Bradley10 Mar 2019 - 13:37

Local rivals Lichfield came to Peel Croft on Saturday to play what was always going to be a hard-fought match.

With both sides needing league points to get them out of relegation trouble. Both sides started well but from the outset the Burton pack was the more penetrative. When Burton won a penalty which took them deep into the visitors’ half, the forwards carried the ball and flanker Jack Neal made a slick pass to lock Athenkosi Kethani who ran in to open the scoring. Will Simpson added the extra two points.

Lichfield fought back and it took a fine cover tackle by hooker James Davies to prevent them from scoring. Burton went on the attack again and a poor clearance kick went straight to fly half Harry Titley who ran the ball towards the line. He passed to Simpson who ran around the outside and the passed inside to scrum half Chaz Bunting, who went over for the second try. This time Simpson missed the conversion attempt.

Lichfield were then able to keep the ball for a long period, but the Burton defence was strong. But as they kept pounding the Burton line something eventually had to give and they went over for a try which was converted.

Burton attacked again but a knock on gave the visitors a scrum on the half way line. They ran the ball, but a poor pass went to ground. Centre Alex Nesbitt fly hacked the ball towards the try line. As he was about to pick the ball up and go over, he was tackled before he had it in his hands and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try. He also sent the tackler to the sin bin for ten minutes.

Soon afterwards Lichfield won a penalty and kicked for the corner. However, the home team stole the line out ball and kicked it into touch to end the half. The half time score was 19-7.

After the restart the visitors went on the attack again but a pass was intercepted by full back Florencio Llerena who ran from the half way line to score. The conversion was missed. The visitors continued to press but some good defence kept them out. They eventually won a penalty and kicked for the corner. Although the ball appeared to go dead the referee allowed the lineout. They won the ball and passed it to the centre who crashed through to score under the posts. The kicker added the extra points.

This was to be their last score of the game as Burton defended really well and kept them out. When Burton got into the Lichfield half, they were awarded a penalty just short of the 22-metre line which Simpson kicked. Not long afterwards they were awarded another penalty which Simpson again kicked to put the result beyond doubt.

The icing on the cake came from Simpson again. Close to the end of the match Burton won a scrum in the visitors’ 22. Simpson joined the line, sold a dummy and went through a gap to score in the corner. He was unable to convert from the touch line but no matter, the match was well and truly won. The final score was Burton 35 Lichfield 14.
