Burton welcomed Derby to Peel Croft on Friday for the third game of the season played under lights, the first being the corresponding fixture at Derby when Burton were the victors. The home team started well and some well directed kicks by fly half Harry Titley kept Derby pinned in their own half. Eventually Burton won a penalty which resulted in a lineout on the 22-metre line. From the line out the forwards took the ball almost to the try line where it was quickly recycled and number eight Lele Gamashe crashed over for the first try. Will Simpson added the extra points.
There followed a period of scrappy play with both sides making errors. The visitors eventually won a penalty which the kicker slotted over to bring the score back to 7-3. This seemed to spur them into action and they played at pace with quick handling and fast running. However, the
Burton defence was good, they tackled well and their line was never really threatened. In this way Burton held out to just before half time when they got into the Derby 22. Lock Athenkosi Kethani charged forward with the ball but was stopped just short of the try line. The ball was recycled and taken forward again and when it was recycled a second time, he was on hand to take the ball over the line for a well deserved try, his first for the club. Simpson again added the extras to make the score at half time 14-3.
After the restart Burton were soon in action again. From a lineout on the Derby 22 the ball was passed quickly along the back line and when it was recycled, Gamashe was on hand to score his second try. Simpson again converted.
Burton were dominant at this stage and when the Derby fly half was sent to the sin bin for a no-arms tackle, they were able to increase their lead. They were awarded a penalty and from the ensuing lineout the forwards drove over the line. Captain Dominic Taylor got the touch down. This time Simpson was unable to convert.
The home team were soon on the attack again but a kick ahead went over the try line and the visitors were able to touch it down for a 22 metre drop out. However, Burton charged down the kick and the ball was picked up and passed quickly to Nick Oxley to score. Simpson again converted.
Derby were not finished yet however and were to have the last word in terms of scoring. The fly half, now back on the field, put a beautifully weighted grubber kick through the burton defence and the centre ran through to dive on the ball and score. The kicker added the extra points. This turned out to be a consolation score only though, as Burton held on for the last few minutes of the game without conceding again. The final score was Burton 33 Derby 10.
This was an entertaining game in which Burton were the worthy winners, earning themselves a much needed 5 league points.
