No Win for Burton

No Win for Burton

Claire Bradley13 Jan 2019 - 11:59

Burton had beaten the Birmingham side at Peel Croft earlier in the season so expectations were high.

This was a game that Burton needed to win as the points could have taken them into 10th place in the Midlands Premier league and possibly out of relegation danger. But a mistake straight from the kick meant that Burton were playing catch up rugby for the rest of the game. The ball was knocked on from the kick off and the home team won the ball from the scrum passed it along the back line to the winger who scored in the corner. The kicker added the two extra points to make the score 7-0 within a minute of the kick off.

Burton came back into the game and put some pressure on the Bournville defence forcing them to concede two penalties, the second of which Will Simpson kicked to open the scoring for Burton. However, Bournville went further ahead not long afterwards as a combination of skill by their backs and some poor tackling by the Burton backs produced another try. The kicker again added the extra points.

From the kick off Burton lock Athenkosi Kethani was the first of four Burton players sent to the sin bin for ten minutes, but they actually closed the gap during that period with another penalty from Simpson. However, the Bournville side kept attacking and were then awarded a penalty which the kicker put over to stretch their lead again.

Burton at last found some rhythm and after the forwards took the ball deep into the Bournville half the ball was passed to fly half Florencio Llerena who threw a dummy and ran in to score. Simson converted to make the score now 17-11.

Just before half time Bournville were awarded a scrum on the Burton 5 metre line. Despite the Bournville front row being forced up twice under pressure from the Burton pack, the referee chose to ignore this and sent number eight Dominic Taylor to the sin bin for kicking the ball out of the scrum. With Burton a man short the home pack won the ball which was passed out and they scored under the posts. The kicker added the extra points to make the score at half time 24-11.

Soon after the restart Burton were awarded another penalty. Simpson again kicked the goal to keep Burton in touch. Burton then did some good work with the forwards and backs combing to beat the defence with flanker Jack Neal eventually scoring under the posts. Simpson converted to bring the visitors’ score to within three points of the home team.

However, having got themselves within touching distance Burton made another fatal error. From the kick off which was kicked deep into the Burton 22 they tried to run the ball instead of kicking for touch. They lost the ball and the Bournville backs pounced on it to score. This time the kicker failed to add the extra points but the lead was stretched again.

The visitors went on the attack again with backs and forwards making some good breaks but seemingly lacking the pace to go all the way to the line, and on several occasions the final pass went astray. Eventually Kethani won the ball in a lineout and crashed through to score in the corner. Simpson missed the conversion but Burton were again within three points.

This was to be there last score however as Bournville ran away with it towards the end of the game. First they scored from a scrum when two Burton forwards were yellow carded for killing the ball. As one of those was a prop and there was no replacement a further player had to go off the field and the game went to passive scrums. The try was inevitable and the extra points were added. They then kicked another penalty goal and with Burton now thoroughly demoralised they added another penalty try at the end making the final score Bournville 46 Burton 26.
This was a very disappointing game in which mistakes and indiscipline cost Burton heavily. They remain at 11th in the league but now on the same number of points as Bournville.
