A Thoroughly Entertaining Game

Claire Bradley9 Dec 2018 - 18:03

Burton welcomed Nuneaton back to Peel Croft on Saturday to revive one of the oldest fixtures in midlands rugby.

All the early pressure came from the visitors, but the Burton tackling was good. However, in their eagerness to get hold of the ball they committed an offence at the breakdown and Nuneaton were awarded a penalty. Which their kicker slotted over to open the scoring.

Burton hit back almost immediately and were awarded a penalty just inside the visitors’ half which they kicked for touch. From the lineout the forwards drove over the try line with lock Ken Archer getting the touch down. Will Simpson added the extra points.

Nuneaton went on the attack again and were awarded another penalty as the Burton backs strayed offside. This was again kicked between the posts to bring them within a point of the Burton score.

Burton soon stretched their lead when the forwards took the ball into the Nuneaton half where it was transferred along the back line to winger Lewis Brooks who scored in the corner. The conversion was missed.

There followed a period of pressure by the visitors but with the rain now hammering down, they made a series of errors i.e. forward passes and dropped balls. This, with strong tackling by the Burton defence meant that the visitors never really looked like crossing the line. When the home team were finally able to break out of their own half, they were awarded a penalty in the Nuneaton 22. They chose a scrum. They won the ball which was passed to centre Josh Kent who crashed over. Simpson lost his footing on the wet ground and missed the conversion. This was the last action of the half so the half time score was 17-6.

Soon after the restart Nuneaton tried to run the ball again but as their winger was tackled on the half way line Simpson stole the ball and ran in to score the fourth try thus ensuring the try bonus point. He converted his own try to take Burton further into the lead at 24-6.

Despite the horrendous conditions the home team were playing well. They took sensible options and kicked to clear the ball from their own half whenever they could. They were awarded a penalty and kicked the ball well into thee opposition 22. At the lineout they were awarded another penalty and this time chose a scrum. The captain Dominic “Spud” Taylor picked up the ball and charged over to further increase the Burton lead. This time Simpson missed the conversion.

Nuneaton still tried to play rugby, but a good clearance kick took the ball from the Burton 22 to the Nuneaton 22 where the winger was forced to tap it into touch. Lock Joe Gazzard peeled around the front of the lineout to score in the corner. The conversion was again missed.
Burton where soon in the Nuneaton half again and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. This time Simpson kicked the goal to extend the lead further and to try and make sure the visitors had no chance of getting back in the game.

Nuneaton kept on trying however and again put the Burton defence under some pressure. They managed to get a scrum on the Burton 5 metre line and pushed over for a try. The kicker added the extra points.

Burton were to have the last word however and when a 22 metre drop out by the visitors went straight into the arms of hooker James Davies he ran towards the line and found flanker Jono Parkinson in support who crossed the line for the final try. Simpson added the extra points to make the final score Burton 44 Nuneaton 13.

A thoroughly entertaining game played in awful conditions and a much needed 5 league points for Burton.
