A Tough Match

A Tough Match

Claire Bradley25 Nov 2018 - 13:37

Burton were at home against Luctonians on Saturday.

The Herefordshire side had spent the last eight seasons in National league 2, before being relegated to the Midlands Premier and have already had some high scoring wins this season, so a tough match was expected.

Early in the game Burton conceded the first of several penalties. This allowed the visitors to get into the Burton 22 where they won another penalty. The visitors’ scrumhalf kicked the goal to open the scoring.

Burton hit back almost immediately and after the forwards had carried the ball into the Luctonians 22 it was quickly transferred along the back line to number eight Lelo Gemashe who crashed over in the corner. The conversion was missed but Burton were in the lead.

Burton by now had gained some ascendency in the set scrums so it was disappointing to concede a try from a scrum on the Luctonians 5 metre line. With his scrum going backwards the visitors’ number eight picked the ball up and made a break on the blind side. He ran almost the whole length of the pitch before passing to the winger who scored. The try was converted to take the visitors into a lead which they did not concede for the rest of the game.

Burton made a lot of mistakes during the game, one of which led to the next try. Fullback Will Simpson gathered the ball from a kick started to run it back and unfortunately passed straight to one of the opposition centres. He moved the ball quickly and the winger scored. The try was converted to make the score 5-17. The visitors followed this try with another one which was the result of poor tackling in the Burton back line. The try was converted to take them further into the lead.

Burton were not out of the game yet though and started to exert some pressure of their own. They won a penalty which took them up to the Luctonians’ 5 metre line. Lock Joe Gazzard won the ball and crashed through the line to score close to the corner. Simpson was unable to add the extra points.

The home team’s confidence seemed to grow after this try and they attacked again and were awarded another penalty. They again won the line out ball and after the forwards had taken it on, they passed it along the line to centre Josh Kent who scored under the posts. This time Simpson added the extra points to bring the home team score within a converted try at half time. The score being Burton 17- Luctonians 24.

From the restart Burton pressed again. Expectations were high when they were awarded a penalty and kicked for the corner. However, this was the first time in the match that their lineout did not work properly. They lost the ball and the visitors were able to clear it. Had the home team scored at that time the game may have turned out differently. As it turned out the first time that the visitors got into the Burton territory in the second half they scored. They won the ball from a scrum and the scrum half made an excellent loop move and then beat the Burton defence to the try line. The conversion was missed.

In their eagerness to get hold of the ball Burton committed a series of offences at the breakdown, one of which was only a couple of metres inside their own half. The Luctonians kicker slotted the ball over the posts for another three points.

Burton continued to press but found it difficult to penetrate the visitors’ excellent defence. However, when they got to the Luctonians’ 22 metre line Gazzard found himself in the centre. Showing the skill of a fly half he kicked the ball through and then chased his own kick to score his second try of the afternoon, securing at least a try bonus point. With a good kick almost from the touch line Simpson converted.
Burton tried to chase a losing bonus point but again found it difficult t penetrate the visitors defence. After working their way from their own line into the Visitors’ half centre Lewis Brooks, apparently not realising that time was up kicked the ball which went into touch ending the match. The final score was Burton 24 Luctonians 32.
