Burton travelled to third placed Bridgnorth on Saturday.

Although they were in good heart after beating Bournville at home last week, that win saw more additions to the ever mounting injury list so it was always going to be a tough game. It did not help matters when from the kick off winger Dewi Williams, in attempting to prevent the ball from going into touch suffered a back injury and had to leave the field.

Burton did well in the early exchanges and forced the home side to turn the ball over. However, a run by the backs came to an end with the final pass being knocked forward. This enabled Bridgnorth to clear the ball into the Burton half where they were awarded a penalty for an offence at the break down. From the ensuing lineout they drove towards the Burton line. Despite good tackling by the visitors a hole eventually appeared and the home team opened the scoring with a try. The conversion was missed.

Burton got back into the game and although their scrum was being pushed backwards, Number eight Kelvin Browne made some good pickups to ensure burton retained possession. In the loose, they were causing the home team forwards to make errors and turn the ball over. However, they were unable to penetrate the strong Bridgnorth defence. The home team worked their way back into the burton half and were awarded a penalty which was kicked over to make the score 8-0.

There followed a period of scrappy play with both sides making mistakes. Burton were eventually awarded a penalty which centre Dave Archer kicked to get the visitors on the scoreboard. Burton then came under pressure from the relentless driving of the Bridgnorth pack and they were unable to prevent a try being scored just before the end of the half. The kicker added the extra points to make the score at half time 15-3.

After the restart the power of the Bridgnorth forwards took over enabling three tries to be scored in quick succession. Two of these were scored by the backs who wrong footed the Burton defenders and one was from a lineout when the pack drove over. Two of these tries were converted to take the score to 34-3.

Burton refused to give up and after some good work by the forwards Archer made a break through the middle and passed to outside centre Loz Betty who scored the visitors’ first try. The conversion was missed.

Burton were still under pressure from the sheer physicality of the home team and when the full back sold a dummy and ran through the gap to score another converted try, it seemed that the result was settled beyond all doubt.

Still Burton kept trying and were awarded a penalty after some indiscipline by the Bridgnorth forwards. They took a quick tap and Lewis Brooks scored in the corner. They tried to save time to attempt to get a try bonus point by refusing the conversion. From the restart they decided to run the ball from well in their own half. It was passed along the back line to Chaz Bunting, playing on the wing, who outstripped the defence and ran around under the posts to score. This time archer took the conversion quickly and added the extra points.
They had run out of time, however, and were unable to score the fourth try which would have given them the bonus point. The final score was Bridgnorth 41 Burton 20.
