

Burton caught the visitors before they had time to settle. From the kick off a Bournville player knocked the ball forward. Burton won the ball from the ensuing scrum and first the backs and then the forwards took the ball deep into the visitor’s territory where it was recycled quickly and passed along the back line for winger Nick Oxley to score in the corner. Full back Will Simpson added the extra points.
From the restart Bournville eventually got the ball in their hands but the Burton defence was strong and the forced a scrum on the half way line. Number eight Lelo Gemashe picked the ball up at the back of the scrum and smashed his way through the defence to score the second try. This time the conversion was missed but the score was now 12-0.
Bournville now started to attack and Burton were penalised for being off side at a ruck. The Bournville kicker stepped up to open their account with three points. The visitors again put the Burton defence under pressure, but Burton stole the ball from a tackle and slipped it to scrumhalf Chaz Bunting who raced from the ten-metre line to score. Simpson, this time, converted.
After this Burton came under some pressure from the visitors and through some indiscipline at the breakdown conceded a series of penalties. Two of these were kicked to make the score at half time 19-9.
From the kick off the home team again came under attack and although they defended well they again conceded a penalty which was duly converted by the visitors’’ kicker to bring them within seven points of the Burton score.
There followed a period where both sides tried to play attacking rugby but both defences remained strong. Eventually Burton won a penalty on the ten-metre line and Simpson kicked the goal to give the home team a bit of breathing space. However, this was short lived as the Bournville forwards started to gain some control and Burton conceded more penalties. From one of these the ball was kicked into touch on the five-metre line and the Bournville pack set up a maul to drive over for a try. The kicker again added the extra points to make the score 22-19.
There could have been a nervous last few minutes for the Burton supporters hoping for the first league win of the season, but they need not have worried. The home team defended well and when they got their hands on the ball, some good handling and running by backs and forwards alike took them into the Bournville 22, where it found it’s way to Gemashe who crashed over for his second try, ensuring the try bonus point. Simpson again converted and there being no further significant action the final score was Burton 29 Bournville 19.
