There used to be regular fixtures between the two clubs until the inception of league rugby took them in different directions, with the last match being in 1988-89.
The visitors started brightly enough but after a kick for the corner Sheffield were able to recover the ball and work their way into the Burton half. They kicked ahead and although Burton won the ball from the ensuing line out they were penalised for holding on to it on the ground. The Sheffield scrum half took a quick tap penalty and scored in the corner. The kicker added the two extra points to make the score 7-0 in under ten minutes.
Burton rallied after this and exerted some pressure on the home team’s defence but as they found last week, defences in this league are hard to penetrate. Burton were eventually awarded a penalty on the Sheffield ten-metre line, but full back Will Simpson missed a kick which was within his range.
For the rest of the half the Burton line was under siege and they defended resolutely. Even when scrum half Chaz Bunting was sin binned for killing the ball they managed to keep the opposition out. However just before half time the home team were awarded a penalty on the Burton 5 metre line. They opted for a scrum and scored a push over try. The conversion was missed and with no further significant action, the score at half time was 12-0.
As the second half started Burton were, despite the score, still very much in the game but although there were some good carries, by number eight Lelo Gamashe in particular, they rarely crossed the gain line. This again showed what a big step up level five rugby is, as last season, backs and forwards alike were running through defences almost at will.
The visitors worked hard but put themselves under pressure with a series of mistakes. The home team won a line out on the five-metre line and one of the forwards burst through the Burton defence to score. The try was converted.
Sheffield were by now on top and their last try came from their backs as they cut through the Burton centres. The kicker again added the extra points. Still Burton refused to give up and kept striving for a score but by now tired from all the defending they had to do, were unable to make any headway. The final score was Sheffield 26 Burton 0.
