Burton entertained Bromsgrove on Saturday.

The Worcestershire team narrowly beat Burton back in September and were currently one place behind Burton in the league so Burton were eager to redress the balance.

Burton started brightly and the backs were in action from the kick off. After the first few minutes the forwards carried the ball into the visitors’ half where it was recycled quickly and passed along the back line. Full back Will Simpson took an inside pass and scored wide out. He was unable to convert his own try.

Both sides showed that they were able to play good rugby but when Bromsgrove tried to run the ball from their own half, fly half Harry Titley made an interception and scored under the posts. This time Simpson added the extra points.

It was now the turn of the visitors to exert some pressure of their own. They were awarded a penalty and with one of the Burton players in the sin bin for an offence at the break down, they chose a scrum. The Burton front row collapsed and the referee awarded a penalty try to bring the visitors within 5 points.

This spurred Burton into action again. They were not afraid to run the ball from their own half and after a typical long run by centre Lewis Brooks who showing his usual balance and elusiveness, beat several defenders, the ball was passed to Dewi Williams who had come away from his left wing position to score on the right. The conversion was missed.

Burton were well on top at this stage and a hurried clearance kick by the Bromsgrove full back did not find touch. Chaz Bunting again playing on the wing, fielded the ball and made a brilliant individual effort to run back and score. Simpson again added the extra points.

Burton always seem to have a period after time when they drop off their intensity and this week was no exception. The visitors put pressure on the Burton defence who conceded a penalty which the kicker slotted over. From the kick off Bromsgrove again attacked and although Burton tackled well the visitors were awarded another penalty which was again kicked over.

With the visitors being now well and truly back in the game they again threatened the Burton line. However the final pass was knocked on and Burton were awarded a scrum. They won the ball and again were not afraid to run the ball from their own 5 metre line. Lewis Brooks made another great break and passed the ball to Simpson to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.

Bromsgrove now started to show what a good side they are and after they put together several phases some poor tackling by the Burton defence allowed a try. The conversion was missed.

Burton were not finished yet however and after winning a scrum Williams again came off his wing and took the ball in the centre. He went clean through the defence to score his second try of the afternoon.

This was to be Burtons last score and although they seemingly had an unassailable lead. They had to hang on desperately for the last 10 minutes or so. The visitors scored a try through their strong running backs, but then missed a penalty. Then with Burton down to 14 men again with a player in the sin bin they attacked again. Although Burton tackled well they could not prevent another try being scored. The conversion was missed, so as this was the last kick of the game the final score was Burton 34 Bromsgrove 30.

The win takes Burton back to the top of Midlands 1 West, one point clear of second placed Dudley Kingswinford with a game in hand.
