The visitors made an inauspicious start as the ball went directly into touch from the kick off. However they soon recovered their composure and played some champagne rugby. Although the home team won the ball from the ensuing scrum they were under extreme pressure from the visitors’ more powerful forwards and the Burton defence was soon able to win the ball back. Burton worked their way into the Camp Hill half and were awarded a penalty fly half Harry Titley kicked the ball into the corner and from the lineout the pack drove to the line for the first try. Hooker James Davies got the touch down. The conversion was missed.
From the restart Camp Hill attacked but despite being awarded a penalty of their own they were unable to breach the Burton defence and Burton were soon on the attack again. A Camp Hill defender knocked the ball forward when attempting to intercept it. The Burton scrum again destroyed their opposite numbers and as the scrum collapsed with the visitors already over the line the referee had no choice but to award a penalty try.
The pack were soon in action again as they drove up the field and passed the ball quickly to Winger Dewi Williams to run in and score. The conversion was again missed. The platform that the Burton pack had created now started to pay dividends as the backs were able to run with freedom and scored two more tries before half time. The first of these was when Williams entered the line and made a tremendous run finishing with a long pass to the other winger Nick Oxley to run in. The second of these ties was also scored by Oxley who ran around from the right wing to join the line and score on the right. Burton had changed the kicker for this game and full back Will Simpson finally found his range as he added the extra points for both of these tries.
The last word of the half went to the home team, however, as their hard running backs finally got their handling errors under control and the visitors were unable to prevent a try. The extra points were added to make the score at half time 7-31.
Burton were soon in action again after the break and after a drive by forwards and backs combined the ball was transferred along the line to full back Simpson to score on the right wing. This time he failed to convert his own try.
The Burton backs were now rampant and some dummy running by the centres allowed Williams to join the lie and score. Simpson converted. The home team did not capitulate and when they were able to get hold of the ball they played some good attacking rugby themselves. They got into the visitors’ 22 and from a scrum they passed the ball along the back line for the winger to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
The Burton team of this season, however, do not let such setbacks as these worry them and they went straight back and scored themselves. This came from another fine run by Williams who then passed the ball to Oxley to score his hat trick try. Simpson again converted from wide out.
From the kick off Burton found themselves defending on their own line. They won the ball from a ruck but instead of kicking they chose to run. All the backs were involved and centre Jack Brooks ran in to score a well deserved try. Simpson again added the extra points. Still Camp Hill refused to give in and again they scored through their strong running backs but again failed to add the extra points.
Burton were to add two more tries before the end of the match. The first of these was scored by substitute back rower Joe Gorman who drove up field passed to Oxley and the supported him to take a return pass and score under the posts. Simpson converted. The second of these was when Lewis Brooks made a chip ahead which was gathered by scrum half Chaz Bunting to score in the corner. The conversion was missed but this was the last significant action so the final score was Camp Hill 17 Burton 69.
