Due to weather conditions and the Christmas and new year rest period they had not played for the previous four weeks and this showed. Especially in the first half they made a lot of mistakes and gave away several penalties. After five minutes Worcester were awarded a penalty due to a Burton defender not rolling away after a tackle. The kicker duly slotted the ball over to take the home team into a 3-0 lead.
Burton then got into the game and forced Worcester to concede a couple of penalties so pushing them back to their own line. From a five metre scrum they won the ball and passed it quickly along the back line for winger Nick Oxley to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
The home team attacked again and were awarded a penalty on the Burton ten metre line which the kicker again put over to take them back into the lead. From the restart Worcester got hold of the ball and the visitors found themselves pinned in their own half for a while instead of a clearing kick the ball was passed to centre Lewis Brooks who raced past the defence and passed to Dewi Williams who ran around to score under the posts. Chaz Bunting added the extra points.
Worcester were then awarded penalty which again was slotted over to bring them back to within three points but from the restart the Burton forwards got hold of the ball and after a strong run by hooker James Davies the ball was recycled quickly and passed to Dewi Williams who scored his second try of the afternoon. The conversion was missed but the half time whistle went with the score at 9-17.
At the start of the second half Burton put the home team under pressure. They tried to run the ball but centre Jack Brooks intercepted a pass and ran towards the goal line and found flanker Joe Gorman in support to score. Again the conversion was missed.
This still did not kill the home team off, however, and they attacked again. Although they tackled well Burton could not prevent them scoring. The kicker added the extra points to bring to within six points of the Burton score.
From the restart the home team again put pressure on the visitors’ defence. They were awarded yet another penalty which the kicker put over to bring the score to 19-22.
This could have caused a very uncomfortable last 20 minutes for the Burton team but they finally got their act together and made some great runs up the middle of the pitch through their powerful forwards and also centre Jack Brooks in particular. They forced their way into the Worcester 22 and the ball was passed along the line for substitute Alberto Mullerach to score. The conversion was again missed.
Worcester were the awarded another penalty which was duly kicked over but Burton had the last word however and after more good work by the forwards the ball was passed to Nick Oxley to score his second try. Bunting converted to make the final score Worcester 22 Burton 34.
