Despite playing with a man short for 50 minutes as the unfortunate Jack Brooks was sent off for what was deemed to have been a dangerous tackle, Burton were still able to keep a clean sheet and increase their own score.
The visitors made a bright start but their backs were unable to penetrate the solid Burton defence and it soon became clear that the home forwards were stronger as they pushed the visitors back in the scrum. After winning the ball from such a scrum flanker Lewis Sturgess drove over the line to open the scoring. Harry Titley converted.
Burton again worked their way into the visitors’ 22 and were awarded a penalty for an offence in the scrum. They chose a scrum again and duly won the ball which was passed along the back line and then to the captain Jack Neale to crash over in the corner. The conversion was missed.
On the 20 minute mark an attempted clearance kick was gathered by fullback Nick Oxley who ran the ball back beating several defenders to score a fine individual try which was again converted by Titley. The sending off then followed but Burton were able to score two more tries before half time. The first of these came after the Burton pack charged up field and Sturgess side stepped past the visitor’s full back for his second try and there was then another solo effort this time by Lewis Brooks, who with support on both sides showed pace and balance to beat the defence and secure the bonus point try before half time. Chaz Bunting added the extra points.
From the restart Burton were soon on the score sheet again as backs and forwards combined to take the ball into the heart of the visitors’ defence, for fly half Titley to score under the posts. Bunting again added the two extra points.
For much of the remaining part of the match the home team came under pressure as the visitors having at last been able to get their hands on the ball attacked. The Burton defence held strong, however, so despite their man advantage Wolverhampton were unable to score. They were also unable to prevent Burton from scoring two further tries. One by Dewi Williams converted by Bunting and the final score of the day was by prop Tom Murphy after a typical rampaging drive by the Burton pack.
A good win for Burton which takes them immediately to the top of Midlands 1 West.
