Win at Wolverhampton

Win at Wolverhampton

Claire Bradley22 Apr 2018 - 12:33

Burton travelled to Wolverhampton on Saturday for the penultimate game of the season.

They started with a bang and soon forced a penalty for an offence at the ruck. From the ensuing lineout the forwards set up a maul and drove over the line with hooker James Davies getting the touch down. The conversion was missed.

From the restart Burton attacked again and when they got into the 22 they were awarded another penalty. This time the ball was thrown to the back of the lineout and Jack Neal ran into score the second try. Will Simpson added the extra points.

At this stage the home team had no answer to the power of the mobile Burton pack. Number eight Kelvin Browne made a break and found centre Loz Betty in support, to run in and score under the posts. Simpson again kicked the conversion to make the score 0-19 inside 15 minutes.

Burton then became very sloppy starting to miss tackles and make handling errors. Wolves seemed to sense that they had the upper hand at this stage and after another Burton error they ran the ball out of their own 22 up to the Burton 10 metre line where they kicked for the corner and the winger ran in to touch the ball down just before it reached the dead ball line. The conversion was missed. This was the final action of the half so the score at half time was 5-19.

The visitors started the second half much better than they ended the first and although the home team tried hard they were unable to penetrate the Burton defence again. As the Wolves got tired Burton ran in six more tries before the end of the game.

The first of these went to flanker Lewis Sturgess who broke off the back of a driving maul to score under the posts. Next Browne made another break and found scrum half Chaz Bunting in support. Bunting ran from the 10 metre line, outstripping the defence to score virtually unopposed.

Burton then won a lineout in the 22 and winger Dale Koopman ran from the blindside wing into the centre to score, again under the posts. Then there was a second try for Neal, who broke off from another drive by the forwards.

Wolverhampton’s speedy backs still tried to run the ball, but a handling error caused it to go loose. It was snapped up by winger Nick Oxley, who ran 60 metres for his only try of the afternoon. The final try was Loz Betty’s second. Lewis Brooks made a break and then found Betty in support. Simpson converted five of these tries but missed with his last kick of the game, so the final score was Wolverhampton 5 Burton 59.

Although they were not at their best this was another good win for Burton who now look set to win the Midlands 1 West league.
