In fact, they had not lost since Burton beat them on their own ground on February 10th.
Burton received the kick off well and immediately started to run with the ball but a knock on caused a scrum on the half way line. There was a bit of a fracas at this scrum which the referee had difficulty in sorting out. It seems that the visitors had come with the intention of intimidating the Burton front row. Indeed, in the next scrum the penalty went against Burton for pulling down. The attempt at goal was missed however and Burton were able to clear. They worked their way into the visitors’ half and won a lineout. The ball was passed quickly along the line to centre Jack Brooks who made a break and found scrum half Chaz Bunting in support to open the scoring. Will Simpson added the extra two points.
Burton gradually got on top in the scrums and when they were awarded a penalty in the opposition 22 they chose a scrum. They got quick ball from this scrum and Simpson went over the line to score the second try. He converted his own try.
The home team were now in the ascendancy with backs and forwards alike making charging runs up field. After such a run by hooker James Davies the ball was recycled quickly and passed on the blind side to winger Alex Nesbitt to score in the corner. Simpson missed the conversion from the touch line thus ending a run of 27 successful kicks in a row.
Burton threatened the line a few more times before half time but the visitors defence held on well and forced a couple of mistakes so the score at half time was 19-0.
From the restart the Burton forwards immediately went on the rampage again resulting in a well deserved try for prop Siphiwokuhle Bakeni who charged in to score under the posts. Simpson again converted.
The home team then came under a bit of pressure themselves and Simpson was sent to the sin bin for killing the ball. The Burton defence was strong however and they prevented a try from being scored. They worked their way back into the visitors’ half where a kick ahead by fly half Harry Titley caused the Sutton defender to concede a five-metre scrum. The ball went loose from the scrum but was snapped up by scrum half Bunting to run in and score his second try. The conversion was missed.
Almost immediately Burton attacked again and centre Jack Brooks made a fine break fending off several defenders until he found Bunting in support to go over for his hat trick try. With Simpson still off the field, Bunting converted his own try.
Burton now back at full strength were awarded a penalty as the Sutton backs strayed offside. From the line out, second row Joe Gazzard made a break and then passed to Davies who ran in for a try. Simpson added the extra points.
By this time the Burton forwards were rampant and another break was made by Davies who passed to Bunting, following up like all good scrum halves, to score his fourth try of the afternoon. Simpson again converted.
Burton then received another yellow card as Bakeni dived onto a player on the floor. The decision seemed a bit harsh as it was a fifty-fifty ball which both players were going for. The visitors at last played with some urgency and although Burton tackled well they were unable to prevent a try. The conversion was missed.
The home team were to have the last word however, as they scored a final try from a backs move. The ball was passed along the line to centre Lewis brooks who made an inside pass to Bunting to score his fifth try of the Afternoon. Simpson converted to make the final score Burton 59 Sutton Coldfield 5.
