For the first 10 minutes Burton did not seem able to hold onto the ball but eventually they got into the Lions’ 22 where they were awarded a penalty which full back Will Simpson kicked over to open the scoring.
At this stage Burton had still not settled down completely but were soon awarded another penalty as the Lions strayed offside again. Simpson took a quick tap to himself then chipped the ball ahead. He gathered it himself and passed to fly half Jamie Dutton who ran in to score his first try on only his second start for the first team. Simpson converted.
After this Burton got their act together and the forwards were dominant in the set scrums and loose play while the backs showed powerful running and good handling skills. In this manner they were able to score another four tries before half time. The first of these was scored by hooker James Davies after a drive by the forwards and a break by scrum half Chaz Bunting who passed the ball to Davies to crash over. There were two pushover tries from 5 metre scrums with number eight Kelvin Browne getting the touch down on both occasions and between these there was a run by winger Dewi Williams from the half way line to score virtually unopposed. Simpson converted all of these tries to make the score at half time Stourbridge Lions 0 Burton 38.
Burton were in action straight from the restart. The recovered the ball and passed it along the back line. In a planned move Williams ran from his position on the left wing to take a pass in the centre and charge through to score on the right. Simpson again added the extra points.
By this time Burton were playing with such pace and power that they were almost unstoppable. Davies made a break and ran like a winger to score. Simpson again added the extra points.
After the restart the Burton forwards carried the ball out of defence and recycled it quickly. The ball was passed swiftly along the back line to
Williams who ran in to score his hat trick try. Simpson again converted.
The Lions had stuck to their task up to this point and when they were able to get their hands on the ball they exerted some pressure of their own. After they were awarded a penalty the scrum half took it quickly and made an inside pass for the centre to score. The conversion was missed.
This was to be their only score however, as they struggled to get any ball at all. They were unable to prevent Burton from scoring six more tries. Two for Simpson, who had now been moved to the wing, two for centre Jack Brooks, one for Joe Gazzard and a second try for fly half Dutton. Simpson converted all of these and in fact, did not miss a single kick all match. His personal points tally was 41 as Burton passed the hundred points mark. The final score being Stourbridge Lions 5 Burton 101.
This was another good win by Burton which sees them still on course to win the league. They have now scored 1023 points for the season with only 282 scored against them.
