Away Win for Burton

Away Win for Burton

Claire Bradley11 Mar 2018 - 13:08

Burton travelled to Webb Ellis Road on Saturday, The home of Rugby Lions.

The visitors started brightly with some good carries by the forwards, Ken Archer in particular, but a couple of errors allowed the home team to get into the game. They put some pressure on to the Burton defence and were awarded a penalty. However Burton stole the ball from the ensuing line out and spotting the space in front of them ran from their own 22. Fullback Will Simpson joined the line and put in a grubber kick for winger Dewi Williams to score Simpson converted.

Burton were soon in action again with the forwards charging up field and recycling the ball quickly for scrum half Tom Hunt to pass to Nick Oxley on the blind side wing, who ran around to score under the posts. Simpson again added the extra points.

The next score came again from a charging run by the forwards which the Lions’ defence was unable to handle. The ball was passed to centre Lewis Brooks who had plenty of space to run in and score, almost unopposed. This time the conversion was missed.

At this stage of the game Burton were really showing excellent form. The forwards were driving holes in the Lions’ defence and the backs were showing great handling and running skills. After another drive by the forwards the ball was passed swiftly along the back line for Williams to score his second try and once again secure the try bonus point before half time. Simpson again added the extra points.

Towards the end of the half the home team came into the game a bit more but good tackling by the visitors prevented them from scoring. Burton then won a scrum against the head and Lewis Brooks chipped ahead for Williams to get his hat trick. This was his second hat trick against the Rugby Lions having scored one in the home fixture in November. Simpson again converted to make the score at half time 0-36.
The Lions now tried to run the ball from their own half but the ball was knocked on and fell into the arms of centre Jack Brooks who ran in to score near the posts. Simpson easily added the extra two points.

The home team then seemed to increase their intensity and their pace and Burton were under the cosh for a twenty minute period. Although they tackled well they gave away a series of penalties one of which led to the home team’s first try when they took a quick tap and ran into score. The conversion was missed.

Their second and final try came from another penalty for what was deemed to be a deliberate knock on. The ball was kicked for the corner and they worked a move around the front of the lineout to again score in the corner. The kicker again was unable to add the conversion.
Burton were not done yet however and were to score twice more before the end of the game. The first score was when Burton won a line out on the half way line. The ball was passed to Jack Brooks who ran through some very poor defence to score under the posts. Simpson again added the extra points. The final try went to the forwards. A good kick ahead forced the Lions winger to take the ball over his own line so Burton were awarded a five metre scrum. The y drove the scrum over the line with Lewis Sturgess getting the touch down. With Simpson having been substituted fly half Harry Titley kicked the conversion to make the final score Rugby Lions 10 Burton 54.

This was a very entertaining match which saw Burton consolidating their position at the top of Midlands 1 West. They are now six points clear of Dudley Kingswinford who have played the same number of games.
