Although Burton started reasonably well they seemed to take a while to get used to the pitch and Melbourne in fact scored first. They drove into the 22 where they were awarded a penalty. They took a quick tap and ran in to score. The conversion was missed.
This was obviously a wakeup call for Burton who almost immediately equalised through winger Dewi Williams. After the ball had travelled along the back line Williams took an inside pass and ran in to score under the posts. Will Simpson added the extra points to take Burton into the lead at 5-7.
Burton were soon into the action again and after some good ball carrying by the forwards the ball found its way to fly half Harry Titley who put a well weighted grubber kick through for right winger Nick Oxley to score under the posts. Simpson again converted.
The visitors had another scare when a Melbourne player Burst through a tackle and passed to his winger who dived over the line. However the pass was deemed forward so the Burton players and supporters breathed a sigh of relief. This was the last threat in the first half as Burton gradually got on top. They were awarded a penalty for an offence at the breakdown which Simpson kicked. Then Simpson scored a try of his own after joining the back line and taking another inside pass. He converted his own try.
From the restart Burton were awarded a penalty and so immediately gained ground they won the lineout and after some good running by the forwards the ball was passed swiftly along the back line where prop James Davies for some reason finding himself on the wing took the final pass and charged over the line to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
Burton were to score once more before half time when centre Jack Brooks sold a dummy to his opposite number and ran through the gap to score under the posts. This was the final action of the half so the half time score was 5-36.
Soon after half time flanker Joe Gorman was sent off for throwing a punch so Burton had to play the rest of the match with fourteen men. Burton tackled really well and the forwards, especially Siphiwokuhle Bakeni, made some good carries. The prop charged down a kick and then kicked it along the ground for the speedy Oxley to race after it and score his second try.
Melbourne then scored a try of their own. After they put some good passing moves together involving their backs and forwards, Burton ran out of defenders and so the try was scored.
Although Burton were not dominant in the set scrums as they usually are they were solid in the line outs and even though they were a man short they showed their class and were able to score twice before the end of the game. The first of these was from a line out when the forwards drove for the line and Bakeni crashed over for a well deserved try in his eleventh game for the club. Simpson again added the extras. The last try came from a break by Davies who again showed how quick he is for a prop. He found scrum half Tom Hunt in support who went over the line. Simpson again added the conversion.
There was some confusion over the final score as it appeared that both of Melbourne’s conversion attempts had missed. However the referee deemed that one of them was good so the final score was Melbourne 12 Burton 55.
