The Leicestershire side came with intent and indeed, through early pressure, could have scored first had the kicker not missed a kickable penalty which they were awarded for a front row infringement.
Burton withstood the early pressure and were soon causing problems of their own. After a drive by the forwards which took them into the visitors’ 22 the ball was passed swiftly along the back line to Lewis Brooks to open the scoring. Will Simpson kicked the conversion.
The home team were soon in action again and won a penalty which took them well into the Lutterworth 22. From the lineout the pack drove towards the line and flanker Lewis Sturgess broke off to dive over for the second try which Simpson again converted.
Although two tries behind the visitors were still very much in contention at this stage and their backs and forwards combined to take the ball towards the Burton line. Although Burton tackled well they were unable to prevent a try being scored. The kicker added the extra points to bring the visitors back into the game at 14-7.
This was to be their last effort of any significance and they posed very little threat after that. Just before half time the forwards again provided good ball which was transferred along the back line to Lewis Brooks who made a break to run in for his second try. Simpson added the extra points to make the score at half time 21-7.
After the restart the visitors did try to run the ball but knocked it forward. The loose ball was pounced on by hooker James Davies who charged up field, beating several defenders before he found scrum half Chaz Bunting in support to score the bonus point try. Simpson again added the extras.
This try just after half time seemed to kill off the Lutterworth resistance and Burton were able to score four more converted tries before the end of the match. The first of these came from a break by Sturgess again who found Bunting in Support to score under the posts. The second was started by Nick Oxley who made ground deep into the visitors’ half where the ball was recycled quickly and man of the match Bunting picked the ball up from the base of the ruck and made another brilliant individual effort, beating several players to get a hat trick try.
The third of these tries was a forward effort. The forwards by this time were in full command both in the loose and the set scrums where they won balls against the head and generally disrupted the Lutterworth scrum. It seemed inevitable then, that when they were awarded a five metre scrum they would score. Although this time the ball did not come back cleanly it was recovered by Sturgess who barged over for his second try.
The final try came from slick handling by the backs. Full back Simpson joined the line to score wide out. As with all the others Simpson converted his own try to take his personal points tally to 19. The final score was therefore Burton 56 Lutterworth 7.
