1st XV Win Again!

Claire Bradley6 Dec 2017 - 15:16

Burton entertained Stourbridge Lions for the first time on Saturday.

The visitors came with a bit of a reputation having beaten Bromsgrove last week. However although they are a young side with a very mobile pack of forwards they were unable to match the power of the Burton team.

The early exchanges were scrappy with mistakes being made on both sides but towards the end of the first quarter Burton won the ball from a scrum on the 22 metre line. The ball was passed to centre Jack Brooks, who seeing that one of the Stourbridge centres rushed out of the line. Exploited the gap and ran in to score the first try. Chaz Bunting converted.

From the kick off the visitors started to cause problems and although the Burton defence was strong they conceded a penalty at the break down. The Stourbridge kicker took the three points.
The rest of the half was again a fairly scrappy affair and although Burton were on top they were not patient and often tried to force the final pass. The score at half time was 7-3.

From the restart Burton again made some handling errors which allowed the Lions to get into the game. Their pack won quick ball and it was transferred along the line for the winger to sore in the corner. Although the conversion was missed Stourbridge were now in the lead.
Burton have not very often found themselves behind this season so this was somewhat new to them. They now changed their style of play and kept the ball in the forwards until they got into Stourbridge territory. They won a lineout on the 22 and the forwards drove the ball on until prop Matt Tivey broke away to score near the posts. Bunting again added the extra points.

From the kick off Burton again went on the attack. They won a penalty which fly half Harry Titley kicked into the corner. Burton won the lineout and went for a pushover try. Hooker James Davies broke from the back of the driving maul to score. Bunting again added the extra points

These two quick tries did not kill the visitors off however and through a combination of good running and handling by their backs and some poor tackling by Burton they scored in the corner again. The conversion was missed but the visitors were now in touching distance again.
They could not score again however as from then on they rarely got their hands on the ball. The Burton pack was superior in the set scrums and driving forward with the ball in hand. The backs also started to come into their own and a break by centre Lewis brooks found Davies in support to run in for his second try of the afternoon. The conversion was missed.

Although the try bonus point was secured the visitors were still only two converted tries behind so Burton needed to make sure of the victory. They went on the attack again and won a line in the opposition 22. The forwards again drove for the line and this time the captain Jack Neal broke away to score the final try and make the win secure. Bunting added the extra points and with this being virtually the last action the final score was Burton 33 Stourbridge Lions 13.
