Lions were in fourth place before the start so a tough match was anticipated.
The visitors put pressure onto the Burton defence from the kick off with some good carries by their forwards. The home team tackled well however and the hard working Jack Neale managed to steal the ball which was cleared from danger. There followed a period of scrappy play when both sides made mistakes. Eventually Burton won a penalty in front of the posts as the visitors committed an offence at the break down. Chaz Bunting stepped up to kick the goal and open the scoring.
The Lions went on the attack again but again the Burton defence was strong. When Burton recovered the ball and attacked, the ball was kicked ahead wasting an overlap. However the Lions' winger was forced to tap the ball into touch. From the lineout Burton won the ball and drove forward. Joe Gazzard broke away and charged over the line for the first try. The conversion was missed.
The powerful Burton forwards were now causing problems for the visitors. They drove up the middle of the field and recycled the ball quickly. Fly half Harry Titley playing flatter than usual took a shallow pass from the scrum half and making the gain line was able to release his backs. The ball was passed quickly along the line to winger Dewi Williams to score. The try was again unconverted.
Burton were soon into action again and after some more slick handling by the backs prop James Davies found himself on the wing to score a try which was again unconverted. Just before half time scrum half Bunting was sin binned for what was deemed to be a dangerous tackle. The score at half time was Burton 18 Rugby Lions 0.
Burton started the second half a man short but were still able to score two tries to the visitors’ one before they were returned to full strength. The first was by Will Simpson after a run up the wing by the speedy Leroy Bitterhout who passed inside for the ball to bounce off the defender into the grateful arms of Simpson to stroll over the line. The conversion was missed.
From the restart a poor clearance kick found its way into the arms of the Rugby centre. Despite some good tackling by the Burton backs they were unable to prevent the try being scored. The fly half added the extra two points to make the score 23 -7.
Burton were soon on the attack again and the ball found its way to strong running Williams who beat several defenders to run around and score under the posts. Bitterhout added the extra two points.
With Burton now back at full strength they were too strong for the tiring Rugby forwards and they scored two more tries before the end of the match. The first of these was by Joe Gazzard. After some good offloading by the pack he battered his way through the final defenders to score under the posts. Bitterhout again converted.
The final try of the afternoon went to Dewi Williams. The Burton pack again won a scrum in the right corner of the pitch and quick accurate passing from the backs sent Williams into the left corner for his hat trick. The conversion was missed making the final score Burton 42 Rugby Lions 7. A good win for Burton which moves them to the top of Midlands 1 West as Bromsgrove lost to Stoke.
