Windy But a Win!

Windy But a Win!

Claire Bradley22 Oct 2017 - 18:08

A gale force wind greeted the Burton team when they travelled to Midlands 1 West newcomers Lutterworth on Saturday.

In the first half Burton played with the wind which was blowing straight down the pitch. The visitors made a bright start and from the kick off they passed the ball to winger Lewis Brooks who raced past his opposite number and then passed inside to centre Alberto Mullarach to open the scoring. Chaz Bunting added the extra points.

From the restart Burton again attacked but tried to make too many wide passes which the wind kept blowing away from them. The home team were loathe to kick the ball into the strong wind so tried to run out of their own 22. The Burton tackling was strong however and they managed to keep Lutterworth in the own 22 for a long period. When Burton got hold of the ball again the forwards drove towards the line and flanker Pete Allen crashed over. Bunting again converted.

Burton again tried to keep the home team pinned in their own half but they eventually broke free just before half time. Despite stout defence from the visitors, when they managed to hold the ball up twice, the pressure from the home forwards eventually got them over the line. The conversion was missed so the score at half time was 5-14.

The travelling Burton supporters were worried that the slender nine points lead would not be enough as they had to turn and face the gale.

They need not have worried however, as Burton immediately started to play the sort of rugby they should have played in the first half, keeping the ball close and driving at the heart of the defence. From a scrum just short of the Lutterworth 22 fly half Harry Titley made and inside pass to centre Jack Brooks and then supported him to receive the ball back again to score close to the posts. Bunting again added the extra two points.

Burton went on the attack again from the kick off and full back Will Simpson made a break to find scrum half Bunting in support to score the bonus point try. Bunting failed to add the extra points to his own try.

By this time the home team were very tired probably due to their first half efforts against the wind. They were missing tackles and although the lineouts were a lottery the Burton scrum was far superior. The visitors were able to score two more tries before the end of the match. The first of these was scored by prop James Davies. After a knock on by a Lutterworth back he picked up the ball and crashed through the defence to score under the posts. Bunting kicked the conversion.

The final try of the day went to the ubiquitous Jack Brooks. Hooker Ricky Whitehall made a driving run at the line and found Brooks in support. The conversion was missed so the final score was Lutterworth 5 Burton 38. A thoroughly entertaining second half, despite the conditions, with Burton again taking maximum points from the game.
