Home Win Against Hereford

Home Win Against Hereford

Claire Bradley15 Oct 2017 - 18:48

Matches between Burton and Hereford have traditionally been tough close fought affairs but this one was different as the 49-12 score line shows.

Burton attacked from the kick off almost immediately won a penalty as a Hereford player committed an offence in the tackle area. Chaz Bunting kicked the goal.

It was now the visitors turn to attack but the Burton defence stood strong and they eventually forced a turnover. The backs decided to run the ball from their own 22. The ball was passed to full back Leroy Bitterhout who went around the Hereford winger and ran almost the length of the pitch to score the first try. The conversion was missed.

By this time it had become obvious that the Burton set scrum was far superior and when they won a penalty close to the visitors’ try line they chose to take another scrum. From this they crossed the line for a fine push over try with number eight Dominic Taylor getting the touchdown. The conversion was again missed.

There followed a period of scrappy play when although both the forwards and backs made good runs they were let down by some handling errors and failure to retain the ball in contact. However the home team were still able to score another try before half time, when Joe Gazzard made a good pass to put centre Jack Brooks into a gap to score under the posts. Bunting added the extra points to make the score at half time 20-0.

Burton were soon into action again and were awarded a penalty when one of the Hereford forwards entered a ruck from the side. From the ensuing line out the ball was passed along the back line to man of the match Jack Brooks who beat his opposite number to score his second try of the match.

After securing the try bonus point the home team seemed to lose concentration and intensity and they let the opposition back into the game. After a poor clearance kick the ball was gathered by the Hereford full back who ran the ball back to score under the posts. The fly half added the extra points.

Burton again put pressure on the visitors who turned the ball over. Substitute Lewis Brooks passed to winger Dewi Williams who scored in the corner. The conversion was again missed.

Hereford were not finished yet and a series of poor kicks and missed tackles allowed their winger to score in the corner. The kicker failed to add the extra points.

This was to be their last score in the game however, and although Burton were playing with less intensity than they had earlier, the now tiring visitors could not prevent them scoring three more tries before the end of the match. The first of these was when substitute prop Jeri Oldfield finding himself in the back line made a sidestep worthy of any back to score in the corner. Then scrum half Bunting made a fine break from the base of the scrum to score wide out and finally full back Bitterhout received the ball in space and outstripped the defence to score his second try of the afternoon. Bunting added the extra points to the last try to make the final score Burton 49 Hereford 12.
